Side or rear exit exhaust
I'd like to see if anyone has made any custom side or rear exit exhaust. I had a 1950 F-3 Ford that I notched the running board and put in some LT-1 rectangular tips for a more custom look. I'd like to see pics of what you guys have used before. I just picked up a 62 Short bed fleet side and will begin the tear down and rebuild in the next month or so.

Re: Side or rear exit exhaust
There are lots of exhaust threads on this forum. There are a lot of personal preference factors in choosing your exhaust type (loud, quiet, tubing diameter, room between the frame rails and at the rearend housing, etc.). In my case, I run 3" diameter tubing. My 4L80E and lowered stance wouldn't allow me to run the exhaust to the inside of the frame rails, so I routed it to the outside of the frame with a turn down off of the muffler right in front of the rear tires.

Re: Side or rear exit exhaust
I prefer the side pipes myself. I'll have to get some pics.

Re: Side or rear exit exhaust
i routed out the side instead of the rear. i think i made the wrong choice. parked next to car or wall exhaust comes in driver side. not a big deal but i think chevy routed that way for a reason.

Re: Side or rear exit exhaust
I ran a single 3" from the turbo straight back and dump behind the rear passenger tire at the bedside. Originally my truck had duals that dumped on the rear axle. I think there is something to be said about making it so the cruise is comfortable in regard to fumes. I've never really enjoyed or had good luck with side pipes as we have lots of traffic - basically filling the vehicle with fumes. Once the exhaust gets past the rear tire this annoyance is a non-issue. Just my thoughts.

Re: Side or rear exit exhaust
With my 62 I ran under the frame behind the front wheel, and under the body mounts and dumps to the sides in front of the rear wheels. My 62 Lowered with the longer Adjustable Panhard bar made tailpipes almost impossible.

Re: Side or rear exit exhaust
Everybody and everybody's truck is different. Do what seems right to you. I had side exits on my 4X4. I really pissed people off, on traffic my rattly old truck would blow right into the windows of everyone in a little car, no one appreciated it. I love the look of side pipes but for me it would do the same thing. I moved my tank to the rear, so going out under the bumper became difficult. I wound up dumping right at the rear axle with my factory height I think I will be fine. All of that being said on something closer to the ground it may not be the right choice.

Re: Side or rear exit exhaust
I tried the pipes dumping at the rear axle and dang near suffocated myself. Mine has had pipes out the rear and the sides- depends on who you want to offend- those to the side or those to the rear.

Re: Side or rear exit exhaust
Rear exit gets my vote too. Exhaust fumes are awful in traffic, makes for unpleasant cruising.

Re: Side or rear exit exhaust
rear of wheel and to the side.
gm did some testing at the kissimmee airport years ago with a customer's vehicle and it was shown that the exhaust, straight out the back, was directed back to the vehicle |

Re: Side or rear exit exhaust
I like out the back. I just punch it in a race and the smoke from my pipes 007-clouds the guy and I win every time.
