Engine setback discussion

Hi,

I am working on a 70 SWB with a L83 swap. I have the engine sitting in the frame and it is sitting nicely. I am using a LT4 oil pan to clear the front cross member. Everything is fitting nicely, but I have the engine about 1.5" back from stock and the pan sits ~ 0.5" below the cross member. I plan on fabricating a skid plate for the pan so that is not a worry but I wanted to hear about the pro/con (yes I asked for it) on this install. Don't know how to attach pics to these posts, but there are a few in my members area.

Cheers!

Re: Engine setback discussion

Im going to move this to the Ls section for you. Your way more likely to get some much more specific answers in there.

Re: Engine setback discussion

Why not just swap to a shorter oil pan?

Re: Engine setback discussion

I looked for a different oil pan for the new Gen V engines. The LT4 pan has a much lower profile over the cross member than the L83/L86 oil pan. Moroso is building one for these swaps, but did not have a release date. As I understood it, their pan will be similar to the LT4 pan. So at the time the LT4 seemed to be the best option.

I wouldn't sweat it being only an inch and a half back from stock, that sounds pretty good in my opinion. Also, if the pan is only half an inch below the crossmember, then unless you plan on laying frame, I would be fine with that too.
