I've been thinking just how much money I've spent on my truck so far. I think I have some 2K in my front end just in parts and labor to repaint the parts. By the time she's running, maybe 3K? By the time "I'm done," maybe 6K?

I could have bought a decent 3/4 or 1 ton stepper for that!

I can't sell her though, it was dad's gift.

Spent $30K plus on my last 81 3/4 ton, traded off and started again recently on a 79 3/4 ton, paid $3K to get it, will shortly have over $10k into it, all cool cause it's a Chevy..

I figure I have $15k into everything for my '67. You could spend enough money in a year on cold drinks to buy a set of tires, but you'd be thirsty for a year. I get people saying you could sell all that old stuff and buy a new truck. I tell them, "But then I wouldn't have an old truck". If it's about the money, buy gold.

If I truly added up what I have spent on project 68 I would probably go into sticker shock, but like Tim said I could have bought a new truck but then I wouldn't have my old one.

I have thought of that many times over. I have over 6k invested in the 68 and that does not include the price of the truck and a long ways to go. I have thought about buying a completely done one already and I am sure it would have been cheaper. But nowadays you will never really know what the PO has done to a complete rebuild and that would always bother me.

I look at this way. I really enjoy learning and working on it, it will be built to how I like it, and I will know exacty what has been done to it.

I've done extremely well on my truck... I think when I did the original "restore" in 2006 I only had around 8K in everything. I now have a new crate motor, drop, etc so I probably have another 4K on top of that, not bad for owning it 20 years. I will probably spend a few more grand on it over the next couple of years as it gets redone again.

My 65 Mustang got a little out of control. 13.5K for an excellent paint car. Redid the interior, T5 swap, rear end rebuild and gear swap, complete front suspension rebuild with $ stuff, vintage air, new wheels, I'm definitely into that car for over 20K now, and that's with me doing everything (including rebuilding the junkyard T5 - really proud of that!) except for the dual exhaust, I had a local shop do that. I wanted a first gen camaro but couldn't afford one, but now I've spent enough to have one... so...? oops?

If you have to rely on anyone other than yourself ,your own tools and your own ability you may as well buy a finished truck you'll be driving next week instead of a few years from now .

Funny I only think about the $'s I put into a build, i do all my own labour, engine, porting and all except paint and if I stopped to consider labour, ouch..
But love the hobby, especially when I see the same guys day after day at the bar 2 doors down throwing their dollars away..

Paint is the most expensive item . do it yourself for $1,500.00 in materials or pay someone $7,000.00 ? your own Labor is cheap !

I have tried painting, man oh man the amount of work to get it ready to paint takes forever, nope don't want to paint, just buy cool trucks with crappy powertrain which is easy, paint no.

Definitely agree with you there. It seems that there are few trucks with a good solid drive train while it's not too hard to find a good solid body.

The ironic thing is and I did not think of it when I came up with this thread, if I had of saved my money and just bought a running truck, I would not have learned all that I have by working on the one my dad gave me.

Tomorrow (today since it is "tomorrow") dad is supposed to come over to help me wire up the new windshield washer pump.

Kept the truck.

Keep a excel spread sheet, it does the adding as we go.

Done most of the work myself except for some coin here and there for a veteran buddy down on his luck.

Just figured in the rear suspension from Off Road Design and seems I have just a few more $ than Special "K" has posts.

Signs and Wonders, I figure I am still ahead.
