EFI fuel tank in C-10 question

I am thinking about putting in a rear mounted tank in my 86 C-10. I am needing it to be baffled for an in tank electric pump. I have seen many using the Blazer fuel tanks. Now, I have seen some with the filler in the passenger side and some on the drivers side so some of them have been installed backwards. Do they still work backwards? The main reason I ask this is that I am thinking of using a tank from a 97 Tahoe and mounting it sideways so that the filler is to the rear so that the filler is behind the licence plate. If a tank work backwards then one should work sideways???? Unless one of you has a better idea of an OEM style GM fuel tank to use that has has baffles and exits to the rear and wont cost boocoos of $$$$'s to buy.

Re: EFI fuel tank in C-10 question

The direction of the fill tube has no bearing on tank performance..as long as it points up..haha...its basically a big square box full of gas..where the gas goes in dont matter..you can mount it to suit your needs..if you havnt already just pull a tape measure on the tahoe tank..as long as the dimensions are ok you shouldn't have any problems with fitment...only issue I see with the tahoe tank is the fill tube isn't in the center of the tank so it wouldn't be behind the plate

Re: EFI fuel tank in C-10 question

not only what mongocanfly says but your license plate is probably very similar to mine and is mounted in the center of the rear bumper?

if this is the case then your fill hole will be lower than the top of your tank. unless you mount the tank lower so you can fill it, then your tank would probably hang low and look like you have a loaded diaper out back.

Re: EFI fuel tank in C-10 question

The main concern I had was if it mattered what direction the tank had to be positioned in to work. I most likely won't be using the Tahoe tank as I am only looking at needing approx 16 gallon of capacity. I just have to research what EFI tanks that will fit. As far as sitting too low and looking like a diaper, the tank can be 14" deep before it would even be seen with my bumper / hitch combo. The tanks from Boyd's are way too expensive costing $650 just for a standard side fill tank. I'm sure that to get it customed from there to a rear fill, it will cost a lot more. It is just that $650 is 2/3 of the cost of me being able to get my LT1 to a 383. I can get junkyard tanks for $50 all day where I live. I am probably going to use a Blazer tank anyway. If I can't make it rear fill, I am going to plumb it up to the stock filler. I am sure this can be done. I was looking at some of the newer Suburbans in a wrecking yard this weekend. I noticed that their tanks are up in front of the rear axle but their fillers are to the rear. I can use this same idea just in reverse. I just will have leave enough clearance for the future 325/50r15's though. Hopefully, they will be big enough to hold the truck in a single lane with the 383 producing 500ft/lbs from 2000 - 4000 and the 700r4 not having a 1-2 accumulator in it. Yes, 1-2 shift right now IS a neck snapper and can put your head through the rear window if your not expecting it. The 350 has just 420ft/lbs now. I love embarrassing kids with their 'Daddy paid for' $30,000+ Camaros/Mustangs with my old POS.

I really, really thought hard about that since it would be so plug-and-play easy. There are some reasons I decided against the 'saddle bag':
- I need to get the fuel filter and lines off of the inside frame rail. The 3" exhaust, cats and muffler are heating the fuel to the point of boiling it. Running the LT1 I had little choice on headers so they are modified Camaro's & sit just 2" inside of the frame rail.
- I already have to run Nitto 555's to half way keep the rear end straight when shifting into 2nd at just 1/2 throttle. Shifting weight from before the rear axle and just on one side, to behind it will benefit.
- I am putting a stepside on it. (Have to put the current bed back on by Brother's 84) Stepsides being lighter, again, need that rear weight.

I did get to go check out a wrecking yard today with a huge inventory. Too many Suburbans to count (all with 40 gallon tanks though) but no Blazers . One of the 91's did have the ECU driven speedometer I needed since my current one died on the odometer side. Saw he had at least 5 '88 up stepsides out there. Beds in perfect shape. My pick - $250. I know it is sacrilegious to put them on a Square Body but for a temporary until I find a correct one, can't beat that. When the time comes, I'm sure I can sell it with no loss. It may even be easier to plumb the hoses from the filler to the rear since the filler looks to be higher. I'll just hit up Rock Auto for a new tank. Their prices are pretty good for the tank and sending unit.

What's that is the bed you ask? It's 3400lbs of concrete!
Yes, the truck looked better once. Ex-wife rolled it.
