1961 need electrical help
Ok so I am changing to a gm 1 wire alternator and want to clean things up on core support. How do I eliminate the voltage regulator and horn relay and all its related wiring? As far as a horn going to do airhorns. Also have installed a 350 and auto trans. Thanks for any help

Re: 1961 need electrical help
First off how are you going to activate the air horns?

Chances are you will still need a relay

Yes I will but will put it under dash or some place out of sight. Looking for different ways to accomplish the task.

Re: 1961 need electrical help
Your new alternator will likely have an internal voltage regulator. Mine does and I tossed that rusty old one in the bin. Sorry I don't know anything about air horns. What's wrong with the original horn?

Re: 1961 need electrical help
Nothing wrong just want to clean up and get rid of all the wiring I don't need or want. Yes it's internally regulated but there still has do be something to do with the old wires.

Re: 1961 need electrical help
Well you could always run some wires down the inside of the firewall and through the floor by the frame then tuck them out of sight run in the frame rail up to the rad support. Could probably fit the OE horn in the frame rail too.

Re: 1961 need electrical help
American Auto Wire sells an adapter that you can plug the plug that used to go into your old external alternator regulator into. All it does is properly reroute all the old wires. Or you can probably find a diagram on how to do it yourself to keep things more clean.

Re: 1961 need electrical help
Not minding your business but just trying to help, check this website out before you do the one wire dance, One wires are great for tractors & such but CAN give less than satisfactory charging results if not installed & wired properly. Good luck.

Re: 1961 need electrical help
I installed air horns in my '64 and used the stock horn relay and wiring. The OEM harness is more than adequate to handle the extra draw.
Unless you want to keep the stocker as well. I would tap in to the hot terminal on the stock relay and run it through the header panel next to the headlight buckets and install the horns and relay there. The activating wires can be run down the outside of the header panel and along the frame to the cab. For the alternator I was going to take apart the stock voltage regulator, gut it and wire it like the external plug in harness everyone sells. That would convert it for a internally regulated alternator and keep a stock appearance. |
