no spark how to trouble shoot coils?

2008 5.3 engine will not start but, it does turn over and I have 80psi at the fuel rail when cranking, I checked for spark and nothing, how do I trouble shoot the coils? Should I pull the fuel rail along with the injectors to see if they are all spraying? Any help greatly appreciated.

Did you check the ignition fuse?

Re: no spark how to trouble shoot coils?

Take a look at the harness that branches off of each coil on to the main leg. Those wires can occasionally get pinched, pulled, or broken (usually when the valve covers needed to be accessed, the coils all get moved, and the harness gets damaged).

Do you not get spark on ANY of the leads, or just on a few? If you don't get spark on anything, its usually not the coils to blame.

Re: no spark how to trouble shoot coils?

I used my old school timing light on my 2002 Toyota individual coils and it lights just a bunch of times instead of just once like the old gen 1's. I was able to locate the bad coil as it did not make any lights at all. I just clamped the plug wire clamp to the small wires going to the coils.

I know it's not specifically about the coils, but make sure that your engine sensors, coils, injectors, etc. are getting power when the ignition is in the "start" position. It's a common mistake to wire it up with a source that is only hot when the ignition is in the "on" position and not "start". Good luck!

Re: no spark how to trouble shoot coils?

ok so I checked all 8 coils going to the pink wire on each one of the connectors and they are all getting 12volts but, I checked the black wire on all 8 for chassis ground and nothing. I think I missed one of the grounds on the harness but I can't find it.

The ground for the coils is usually behind the power steering pump, on the left lower side of the block.

I'd say a ground that wasn't hooked up.... Good thing it wasn't touching anything, if it were, it may have run sometimes and other times not, which would have been harder to diagnose over the internet!

Re: no spark how to trouble shoot coils?

She fired right up but, the throttle is not responding, I think it's because I'm running a 2008 Impala pedal. Also I'm getting a misfire, I'm going to check the injectors.

Re: no spark how to trouble shoot coils?

Swaped D and F pins on the pedal connector and that did it, I'm getting instant throttle response. I erased the p2138 code hope it don't come back.

Re: no spark how to trouble shoot coils?

Just wanted to thank everyone for your help, I got more input here than any other site, well maybe LS1TECH was helpful also, Ls1Nova would always respond to my novice questions. Took her out for the 1st time and it seems like I might have a vacuum leak, it revs really high when I'm at a stop.
