NP440/A833 tranny install
Hey guys, I'm finally dropping the 82 Chevy truck OD tranny (3 speed + OD) in my 66 behind the 283. I have the iron case NP440/A833 and the original aluminum bell housing that fits both bolt patterns and it appears to bolt right up. BUT i don't have the dust cover for this bell housing or the starter. Starter appears to be easy, just buy an 80-85 or so truck starter. But does anyone know what dust cover will go on this aluminum bell housing? I reckon I can fab one, but if they are out there for another similar bell housing, I'd sure like to know! Also this bell housing has no mounts on it, but the tranny has a rubber one on the tailshaft end, so I guess I'll just hang another crossmember to support that tail mount. Think three points of support (motor mounts and tailshaft mount) are good enough?

If you find one that fits please let me know. I have had no luck searching and plan to cut one out myself.

This link has a lot of information.

Re: NP440/A833 tranny install
I will! My tranny came out of an 82 Chev 3/4T diesel long ago. Story is that friend's dad had the truck and rear end was a low ratio and combined with this tranny, (GM's attempt at gas mileage?), it took him about 2500 rpm just to get the SOB rolling pulling loaded cattle trailers and he hated it. I could foresee the need for an overdrive with my 66 4.11 rear end and told him I'd swap out his tranny for a granny 4 speed (Low, 1,2,3) if he'd give me the overdrive. Those 4 speeds were everywhere and it cost me $75 to pull one at a junk yard and swap it into his truck. BUT, I didn't get the bell housing at the time and the 4 speed bolted right up to his, but his didn't bolt up to mine. Finally found the aluminum bell 8 or so years later and now she's going in! And this tranny is a HEAVY one!

Re: NP440/A833 tranny install
I put the A833 in my 65 stepside, behind a 250 I6. It bolted right up to the
stock cast iron bellhousing. I put a tailshaft mount under it, along with the engine and bellhousing mounts. Runs and acts sweet, pulls the empty trailer fine, but when I carried a 65 GMC 3/4 t home down I-40, I'd only get 2-3 miles in o/d and have to go to 3rd to get the speed back up, with 3.73's and 15's. So, if you plan on heavy trailer hauling with the gear box, you'll need 4.10/4.11 gears or lower. OLDTRUCKHAULER

Re: NP440/A833 tranny install
I've got one with the Chevy bellhousing pattern, and run it in my Suburban without a specific trans mount... just using the stock '61 mounting arrangement (under the crank pulley, bellhousing ears).
235/75/15 tires and 3.42 gears, it honks down the highway at 80mph with no problem. I've got two more: one with aluminum case, one with an iron case, both have the Mopar-style mounting pattern and require the special bellhousings. I've got one with mechanical linkage, one with the mount for the hydraulic slave. -Brad

Re: NP440/A833 tranny install
In my opinion, being bolted to the engine and the tailshaft mount is more than enough support for the trans.

did your A833 come out of a car or a pickup as the trucks had a larger input bearing housing than the earlier p/u cast iron b/housings did rom |

If you've got side mounts on the block, and a cross member for the tail shaft, you don't need to worry about bellhousing mounts. -Brad

Re: NP440/A833 tranny install
FYI, Have a 1986 short bed with the same LY6 option trans. 3 spd plus OD. It came factory with brace rods, each side that attach to the block at the motor mounts and the trans/bell housing. I can get some photos of them in a few days if interested.

Re: NP440/A833 tranny install
There's really no need to fabricate a trans crossmember. All you need is a trans crossmember from a '63-'87 truck. If you do decide to fabricate one, don't forget that you need to set the angle of the engine and trans correctly.
