Engine, Trans, Rearend swap
What sort of pitfalls are there is installing the engine, auto trans, and rearend from a 1987 Corvette into my 53 Chevy pickup? It has a small block, th350, and late model camaro rearend in it now. But the rearend is about 3 inches (overall) too wide and the corvette is narrower by 3 inches. And I can get the Vette insanely cheap.

Re: Engine, Trans, Rearend swap
A couple of outfits make kits to install that model of Corvette rear ends in AD pickups pretty much making it a bolt in.
The engine and trans should bolt in where the other small block came out with maybe having to move the trans mount and or possibly needing to use a short water pump for radiator clearance if the engine is mounted a bit forward for valve cover clearance. The name of the outfits making the mount kits for the rear slips the mind right now and I don't have a copy of Classic truck here to look at but there is a thread on that running right now that should be on one of the first few pages of this board.

Re: Engine, Trans, Rearend swap
I used Flat Out Engineering for my kit. There are others also.

Re: Engine, Trans, Rearend swap
If you're going to use the vette as a donor, just pull the controls out of the donor. Hey, they're already designed to be compatible...

Re: Engine, Trans, Rearend swap
The '87 Vette computer will work well enough for a stock or mild engine. You can have someone make a "custom" chip to address specific changes, such as shutting off the Vette security system and changing speed calibration if you use different size tires. If you are considering powertrain upgrades then do some research as some choices will cause more heartache than others. One thing to note as that Corvettes of that vintage often came with notoriously low (numerically) rear end gears. 2.59 and 3.07 gears aren't uncommon with an auto trans. Another factor to note is there are two rear differentials available. The more desireable Dana 44 is found behind manual transmissions while autos were equipped with a Dana 36.

Re: Engine, Trans, Rearend swap
Ok. But the Corvette got away from me while I was getting info for the swap out. I wanted it primarily for the rearend. This is mainly due to not knowing what is in my truck now. I was told from the guy I got it from, it was out of a gem lV Camaro. But thru an exhaustive effort I haven't seen able to confirm that. Is there any literature out there that will tell, definitely, how to identify a late model GM rearend without tearing it down?

Re: Engine, Trans, Rearend swap
Go to Chevy High performance magazine website.
About 10 years ago, they did a blurb on how to tell what rearend you were looking at in a junk yard, it primarily shows cover plate, and rear end tags, and what to look for.

Re: Engine, Trans, Rearend swap
First on GM models there is the casting number that tells you if it is a 10 bolt or 12 bolt etc...
Second on the passenger side of rear axle tube there is two alphabet to tell you what the gear ratio came with it and if equipped with posi Third the axle numbers correspond to month and year it was built and sequence number built that year. Fourth the last alphabet number tells you which of the four GM plant it was built at.
