Broken Pinion Gear
Well this weekend the pinion gear went in my 70. It was a 373 and has a posi.
It would be great to find a used set of 373 gears or even better a 3 series posi and a set of 308 gears to go with the turbo 350 and 30" tires. Anyone have experience with this swap and the change it made towards drive-ability on the freeway vs off the line? Anyone have a gear set / posi laying around they want to part with? Thanks in advance for your help. I saw a great write-up on the site on how to do the replacement and setup. I've never done one, but it gave me the confidence to do it myself.

Re: Broken Pinion Gear
What axle do you have? That will help people determine if they have what you need. If you have a 14bolt full-floating rear with 10.5" ring gear, I have what you need. But you probably have something closer to stock.

Re: Broken Pinion Gear
Oops, I thought I added that. I have a 12 bolt. I found a guy that has a beautiful 3.08 open rear end with ring and pinion and he wants little for it. It is out of a 1980.
He switched ratio because he went with a ls and 4l80 and 3.08 was silver state run speeds in OD. Will this 1980 12-bolt diff unit fit in my 1970 12-bolt diff unit? Of course I will buy all the bearings and shims for my 1970 model unit.

Re: Broken Pinion Gear
It will fit. Bearings and other parts should be the same from the two.

Re: Broken Pinion Gear
I'm sure someone on here has what you need for your truck. You can pay a small fee, HERE and post a wtb ad in the parts section.
If I had a set, I'd send them to you. The only extra set I have is 2:72, not a good fit for you. What transmission do you have? |
