Could really use some transfer case help please
So it's like this..
I have a 1979 gmc k2500 that I'm trying to do a conversion on the drivetrain. It has a Th400 with a 203 in it. I'm trying to change it with a 700r4 and a np241c . I have bought both already and here is the problem I have now. It took me forever to find a 241c passenger side drop out here but I did. Problem is that it's VSS.. How can I make it a mechanical speedo ? Please help me figure out this problem. Thank you in advance Do you think if I could find a busted 241c and replaced the speedo gears and shaft sleeve it would work? If so, would it matter if it came from a driver or passenger side drop case? |

Re: Could really use some transfer case help please
241 is a stronger case and a better choice for a 3/4 or 1 ton.

You might try posting in the 4x4 section or in the 67 to 72 section where you will have more eyes on the post.

Re: Could really use some transfer case help please
It is just a different tails shaft and gear on the output shaft of the case. i had the same problem but the other way. I had a case with a gear and needed the vss. If you can't find what you need in your area i may have the old parts still with the mech speedo. i know you are a long ways away from me. but i will look.

Oh PLEASE have a look... I can't find the housing any where out here
I'll be sitting here with fingers crossed! I'm not worried about shipping if it helps me get my girl back on the road. I thank you so much for checking |

Re: Could really use some transfer case help please
Agreed, I also did the switch the other way. Converted my cable speedo to an electric one.
You'll need just the rear tailshaft housing and speedo gear (and snap rings). Pretty easy swap other than the snap ring and having a strong enough snap ring pliers. You don't need to swap the shaft or anything else. Sorry, I think I already threw away my cable housing.... I did a write-up on a conversion the other way with pics. This may help you out (provided the pics show up for you). http://ck5.com/forums/threads/conver...p-pics.296187/

Re: Could really use some transfer case help please
Keep your search window up to 1989, K5 Blazers and Suburbans. Up to 1987 for pickups.
1990 Blazer/Suburban went to electric speedo. 1988 Pickups went to IFS front design. I don't know how far back the 241's went though.....

I thought that the np241 passenger side drop with a mechanical speedo only came out in some one tons 88-89 as well the K5 Blazer, Jimmy and Suburbans? I have been told that a np208 tail housing will not fit the np241. |

Re: Could really use some transfer case help please
I guess you may be right. I looked at a spec for 87' pickups and it says np208's. I thought they ran a few years in the last few years of the pickup before switching in 88' but I stand corrected. Learn something every day....

I'm so excited!! I paid a small fortune but I bought the housing I needed I have a question for you. Now that I have the housing all I need is 2 snap rings and the speedo gear right? Or do I need anything else? Thank you. |

Re: Could really use some transfer case help please
Sorry it took me so long but I found that stuff but the housing I forgot was cracked. But it looks like you still need the gears. I have those they are your for the price of shipping if you want them.
