Repairing rust pits

There are places on my truck where the rust damage is so bad it will require panel replacement or at least patch panels. But I'm finding areas where the rust could wire wheeled down to metal and some form of coating might be the way to go. This is especially the case where a patch panel would be difficult to form and replacing the entire panel wouldn't be practical for a small section of rust. I've attached a pic of my truck's windshield frame as an example. What are your favorite methods/materials for sealing, filling and protecting an area of rust like this? I'm especially interested in hearing success stories where a method has been tried, the truck painted and it's held up nicely for a few years.

Thanks
