'59 door rust
I knew I should have kept working on the top. Decided to grind on LT door, surprise...not really. Not quite sure which direction to go on this. I probably could fab something, but man, pretty forked up...thoughts? Kel

My 58 is rusted in the same area , i am guessing it has to do with the windows scraper seal (whatever its called) that is supposed to keep the water from running inside the door
I am going to have to patch the bottom of my passenger door , though the skin on mine seems intact (from what i can tell without sanding/grinding) , but the bottom of the door is pretty much toast , thats what happened from it sitting outside for about 15 years , neglected |

Most of these trucks have rust there unless it has already been repaired. Patch panels are available to repair it.

Don't know if that bottom picture is a optical illusion or not, but it looks like that door has had a bottom skin put on it once before. You would have thought if someone had been that deep in the door before it would have some type coating to protect.
I have put new bottoms and outside skins on my doors. All of the news panels fit pretty well. Just make sure you read an article on planishing welds with all of the flat weld area on the outside skins. JT from SC |

I know that I'm new to this forum, but I just did this repair on my 55 2nd, not hard to do at all! If I can get my pictures to work I'll post up a few. Just measure measure measure!!!!

Totally replaced both my door bottoms with repop bottoms from The Car & Truck shop. Took a little fiddling to make it fit right but now it's done and looks great. I'm pleased. I suggest going this route if they're Swiss cheese like mine were after sandblasting.

Yes, that's what I did. This allows access for holding a dolly while you planish out the welding shrinkage. Even then it's difficult to get the panel flat. I got it the best I could but had to use filler to get it perfect. My intent was to not have filler any more than 1/8" thick but it may be 3/16" in places.

Check your door hinge connect braces for cracks first.
I had to remove mine and repair.

Take a good close look at the lower hinge mounts. Mine were cracked around the weld nuts. It is easier to remove/repair those now before welding the skin back on. Somewhere in roger55's build thread, he shows how to repair if needed.

When you go to bend the outter skin edges, do you use the flat panel pliers, channels locks or hammer them over. I don't have the panel pliers, think I saw them at HF for about $10, others around $40?

There is a special hammer for doing it.
I bought one of those hammer and dolly kits from HF and it had one in there. It was the first time I had done this and I thought that hammer worked very well. |
