Question Window seals

Need a little help with the anti-rattle seals at the bottom of the window on the doors. The ones I have for the outside of the window don't seem to cover the gap sufficiently. When the window is rolled up there is a space that starts at about halfway and grows as it nears the division bar for the vent window. Seems like the seal is not wide enough to bridge the gap between the door and the window, or the division bar needs to be more centered. Can I adjust the division bar to be more centered in the door? Right now the division bar is against the inside edge of the door. Are the seal I have the wrong size?

Not sure what to do to solve the problem.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Mike

It sounds like your door is spread. The 72 doors have a screw in them at the division bar to hold the door from spreading. The 71 and older doors have tabs welded together at the division bar and they are known to separate. The door gap should be the same front to rear, and you may want to check it.

Jim, thanks for advise. I just checked the gap in the door and it is even along the length. Any other thoughts? The division bar is against the inside edge of the gap in the door. Is that the way it should be? Is there anyway to adjust its position. This door is on a 67 and it does not have the screw at the division bar.

mshirey, you got the correct advice from JimKshortstep4x4 the strap that holds the outer door skin top to the correct distance to the inner door skin has broken underneath your vent window. You will need to pull the vent window and repair this strap thats just behind the division bar under the vent window in order to get your outer rubber scrapper to seal correctly to the glass in your door.

I would like to check the measurement on the gap of my doors to see if it is near spec. Both doors were recently stripped down and I know that the straps were intact when I just reassembled them. I just checked to make sure that the tabs were still intact and they seem to be fine. I would appreciate it if someone could tell me what the width of the gap should be at the division bar. This would help me to determine if the door did spread. Thanks!

Hi Mike,
I just ran down to the basement and measured a set of doors in near perfect condition, totally stripped with the intact brace. The gap varies between 15/16ths of an inch to an inch and a 16th.
I've heard complaints similar to yours before but I'd never considered the spreading issue. Let us know your results.

Spoof, thanks for measuring the door. I got out the vernier calipers and did a check on my door. My door gap varies between .965 and 1.065. It seems to be about the same as your measurements. While I'm glad it appears that the door is fine, I don't know what the problem might be. I wonder what the width is of an original outer rubber scraper as compared to a new repro? Anyone have original rubber scrapers on their truck they could measure?

I just measured one of my doors that we are working on and it goes from .920 at the latch end to .758 at the division bar end, (before the division bar). I am not sure what the tolerances are, but it sounds like your gap is on the high side.

I think my son's truck has an original scraper in it and I will try to get a measurement today.

I am also wondering why your division bar is not centered as our trucks are. Did you install the inner fuzzie first and run it between the bar and the door?

Good luck!

Jim, thanks for checking your door and providing another data point. Wow, the gap on your door is much tighter especially at the division bar. I was surprised that it actually got narrower at the division bar. You did discover one mistake of mine and that is that I have the fuzzie on the wrong side/direction. I need to switch them so that the flat end is behind the division bar. That will help to better position the division bar, thanks! However, I do think that I will still have a space between the window and scraper, but it will be smaller. I was wondering what year truck is the door you measured off of. My door was .965 at the latch and I would be surprised if the door spread there. It sounds like I need to figure out how to pull the gap together at the division bar.

The door that I measured is a 72 and the screw is not in it as we are painting it. I am sure your door gap is fine at the rear as it welds into the door/window frame on that end. If I take a measurment (4) inches from the latch end, I get .858 and from there it goes down to the .758 dimension. I have not measured a
lot of the door gaps, but I will try to get some more measurements on other doors as we have 8-10 doors of various years.

I measured my son's outside window scraper, ( I believe that it is original as it is pretty ragged), anyway it measures just under 1/2".

Thanks for checking on the scraper width. My repro. is about the same width. It measured just a little smaller than the original around .450 - .475. I still need to play with the positioning of the fuzzie behind the division bar. I should get to that tonight or tomorrow.
