Slow turnover on starting

When starting the last couple of times it has sounded like either I have a dud battery OR it is tough to turnover, almost like it's extra tough to turn the engine over and its turning over sloooowly. I'm going to change the battery anyway but is there a recognized upgrade that people use with the 350 V8 for starting?

I just went through this same problem on my 307 last week. It turned out to be a combination of two factors. One, the alternator had somehow come loose on the adjustment arm and as a result wasn't really charging the battery like it should. Two, my starter was beginning to reach the end of its life. After tightening the alternator and replacing the starter, she fired up better than ever. In my opinion, a stock replacement for the battery, alternator, or starter should more than get the job done on a stock or mildly upgraded small block.

Also if the large ground wire breaks it will do this, my 86 was doing the same thing, just had the smaller body ground doing all the grounding

Question for a mechanical retard, or at least someone who is just learning as they go, but where do I check the main ground going from and to please? Seems the first thing to check, followed by the voltage coming from the battery.

It will be the big black wire coming off the negative side of the battery. Usually it goes right to the engine block and bolts on, over time it can become so corroded it loses connection or even breaks.

There should also be a smaller wire coming off the negative side of the battery attaching to the body somewhere. So wouldn't hurt to check/clean those wires along with the terminals
