Re: '66 Axle and Transfer case ID help
Front axle looks like a Dana 44, rear looks like a Dana 60. Not sure on the transfer case, not too familiar with the pre-New Process stuff.

If you could get a picture of the knuckles, that would be the best way to ID the axle, open knuckle Dana 44s used ball joints where the Dana 60s had king pins. |

Re: '66 Axle and Transfer case ID help
My money is one the front being a Dana 44. Is this a 1/2 ton frame and running gear or a 3/4 ton? The transfer case I believe is a Rockwell T-221. The rear disff could be either a Dana 44 or a 60. If it is a 3/4 ton it is a Dana 60. A 1/2 ton could be either a Dana 44 if the frame is a GMC or a Dana 60, typically a Chevy diff but rare in a 1/2 ton.

T case is a Spicer 23 or 24. I had one in a 57 Napco 1 ton years ago. IIRC the 23 was Ford and the 24 was GM or something like that. Could be the other way around. Its been a while. If there is a tag on it, it may have the Spicer name printed within the Dana diamond that we are familiar with. Looking at the x member that's supporting it, Im guessing it's not original to the truck either. Decent T case. A little noisy but plenty strong. I ran one in a '76 CC Dually that I converted years ago. That truck was flogged anytime it was driven. The 221 has shorter shift shaft "nubs" and its inspection plate is on top. One more dead giveaway is that the 221 input is on top and the output for the rear is on the bottom and at the same level as the front output. I suppose that this is the reason that the 221s run hotter than most. Power is transferred though an idler even in 2wd instead of being coupled to the rear yoke like the 205 or the Spicer units which basically use the T case like a center support bearing in 2wd.
