Crank sensor relearn

I put an LS3 in (GM eRod), and it seems to run just fine. It included a coupon for a free GM dealership "Crank sensor relearn" procedure.

What's the benefit? What's the downside if I never do it?

Is this an emissions thing, a driveability thing, or what?

no major downside to not doing it. They include the coupon because some swaps won't run right without it being done. It resets the crank angle sensor 0 and makes sure its in phase with the cam position sensors. My swap didn't need one, many don't.
