Th2004R swap
I'm starting to get things lined out to swap out my powerglide for a TH2004R in my '66 C10 and have a few questions. I'm under the impression that the driveline should work fine and that I'll have to move my rear tranny mount back a little and add the TV cable and some wiring for the locking torque converter. But what about the shifter? will the stock linkage work or is there something else I will have to use? Do the backup lights still plug into the new tranny? Are there issues with the cooling lines? I'd like to get a plan to sort out any issues before I start this and would appreciate any advice from someone who had been down this road before. FWIW this will go behind a freshly rebuilt 283 with a 3.73 rear end.

Re: Th2004R swap
The 200-4R is longer than the powerglide so you will have to shorten the driveline. The cross member has to go quite away back, the 200-4R rear mount is at the very rear at the trans. The shifter linkage will not work without some mods, there are kits out there that you can get, lokar has one. Cooler line will work. Back up light switch is under the dash on the column, nothing to change there. VERY important to hook up throttle pressure cable correctly, and adjust.
There or also kits for the lock up convertor connection, you need a 12V fused source. |

Re: Th2004R swap
Possibly not. There are two length powerglides. If it is the longer of the two you are OK.

Re: Th2004R swap
Oldgoalie pretty much covered it.
1. Check the lengths, as noted above there are 2 glide lengths, one is pretty much plug and play and the other not so much. 2. Usually the trans cross member can be easily relocated. Sometimes there are even holes that line up! Just make sure the trans mount is not bound up. 3. The shifter usually can be tweaked to work, sort of. At least you can usually get P-R-N-OD. Usually it will not get L. You can play with it and make your own linkage or just buy the kit. 4. With a 283, depending on the cam, think about a higher than stock converter stall.

Re: Th2004R swap
Thanks for your answers. That helps me a lot. What about the speedometer cable? Anything different there?

The speedo gear set are for that vehicle it came out of.. Take mine spare 2004r that will get rebuilt. it came out of a 87 monte LS with a rear gear of 3.23 and had 215/65/15 tires (26" tall) So, in a vehicle with different rear end gears and /or taller tires.. the speedo will read incorrectly.. The monte SS 83-85 had 3.42 gears and 26" tall tire The monte SS 86-88 had 3.73 and 26" tall tire The GN had 3.42 and a 26" tire the olds 442 had 3.42 iirc. |
