Battery Behind Seats: Thoughts?
So I have recently done an S10 swap on my 54 3100 and I have placed the battery behind the seat. I recently acquired a leather 3 piece bench for the truck and wanted to see if anyone has had good / bad / other experience with storing the battery behind the seat? Will the acid in the air affect the seats? Is it dangerous to keep here? Am I over reacting? lol
I don't want it under the hood cluttering things up and I dont have space below the bed wood so it would either have to go in a box in the bed, behind the seat or on the running board. Thoughts? Thanks in advance! Steve |

Re: Battery Behind Seats: Thoughts?
If your putting it inside you will want a sealed and vented (outside the cab) box.
Batteries off gas and have a vent.

Re: Battery Behind Seats: Thoughts?
had the battery behind my seat going on 7 years without a problem
new batteries are sealed, while they still vent to some degree it's nothing like the old batteries

Re: Battery Behind Seats: Thoughts?
The battery in my 2000 Cad DTS is under the back seat and has a vent hose setup connected to it to vent under the car. I just changed it last Friday and the old one was dated 2006. It would probably still be good if I hadn't parked the car over the winter.
Along with the battery that fits that car there are batteries for Audis and Mercedes that have a connection for a vent hose and are quite low profile because they go under the back seat. They like the Cad battery usually have good cold cranking amps too.

Re: Battery Behind Seats: Thoughts?
Agreed ..todays batteries are far more advanced than batteries of yesteryear..I'd get a good gel cell or fully sealed one just to make sure though...heck they even mount them on their side nowadays with no issues..

Re: Battery Behind Seats: Thoughts?
batteries offgas, like said, and should be in a fairly sealed up space with a vent to the outside. the gas displaces oxygen and can be explosive. one of those RV battery boxes would probably work if there is a vent. check out what RV's use, they always vent the locker even if the locker is not a sealed space. must be a reason. if you have ever seen a battery that blew the top off you would know what I mean. a short circuit at the starter solenoid caused havoc.
don't know much about the gel batteries but it must still be a chemical reaction so there has to be something going on there, right? try to place some booster lugs somehwere else because the spark from connecting a booster cable set can also create havoc around a battery. just my thoughts |

Re: Battery Behind Seats: Thoughts?
While probability of another event is low i have been up front and personal with a battery explosion. Not my doing. That forever in mind i couldn't think of having a battery in the cab. I always liked the ones mounted up on the firewall on Ads and others. Mine is lifted and took care to contract an enlarged/elongated battery tray under the rh running board. There's room for 2 to 3 in a row and accessible via the batt cover.

Re: Battery Behind Seats: Thoughts?
Was 55 years ago and still remember the noise and mess. A customer demanded i jump start his Brit made, positive ground, sports car. Fortunately for me I had made it clear I did not want to do it and would not be responsible as I knew those thing were wired weird. I suppose an
enclosure and venting would limit some damage but not all. |

Re: Battery Behind Seats: Thoughts?
I've installed my battery behind the seat and have never had a problem. . of course its in a contained battery box from NAPA and bolted to the floor.
