Help Identify This Replacement SBC
First post.
Finally bought myself a money pit😄 1972 GMC 1500 Super Custom 350/350. I'm looking for some help identifying this motor. The suffix does not show up on any of the websites like nastyz28. Thanks in advance. |

Re: Help Identify This Replacement SBC
Well, yes. But any ideas about the specs? I know it was made in Flynt. Beyond that, don't know. 2 or 4 bolt? Original HP?

Re: Help Identify This Replacement SBC
because it's goodwrench engine, info on the stamped #s may be limited. You might want to pull the casting #s & try those. Anyway, looks like a base 350, specs somewhere around 200 HP.

Since I'm not burdened with keeping the engine original, was contemplating a limited budget performance bump with this as the foundation.

Here's a link I found. This is for a stock GM Crate motor. : http://www.jegs.com/p/Chevrolet-Perf...52506/10002/-1

Re: Help Identify This Replacement SBC
Hopefully, that's it. The blue paint makes me wonder if this was a crate motor or a warranty replacement. I had read that all GM crate motors are black. I suppose it could've been repainted, but why blue.
Many thanks.

Re: Help Identify This Replacement SBC
Not a warranty engine. The suffix code would look different. There would be CE then 6? numbers.
That decodes as built in Flint, Oct. 30 and I would bet that the AJP is a late 1973 350-155hp 2 bolt main. Since it follows AJN. Gm used thousands of suffix codes in buses, boats, motorhomes, etc. It would not surprise me if there are still some unknown. Valve covers could be swapped. Check the casting number on the block and the date code if it is there by the oil filter housing. I would go as far as to pull a valve cover and check the numbers on the head as well. |

Re: Help Identify This Replacement SBC
I thought the same, but wasn't sure, i.e., a 1973 C60/Omega motor? That's starting to sound like a turd for a foundation.

Re: Help Identify This Replacement SBC
I would back up and punt it. It would be as much work and possibly $$ to do a head/cam swap than to R&R a better foundation. If you are going for more hp/tq.

Re: Help Identify This Replacement SBC
Yes, I was thinking of heads, cam, headers, and an intake. Keep it simple and mild. 350 ish HP, but maybe this isn't the block to work from.

Re: Help Identify This Replacement SBC
The most telling tail will be the head casting number , dont think I would put a top end kit on one of those old goodwrench motors , especially if it has dished pistons . Id opt for an l31 long block and go from there . But thats just me .

Re: Help Identify This Replacement SBC
I would run the engine & head casting numbers and see what they come up as !
Being blue it very well could be a 305 !

Re: Help Identify This Replacement SBC
I would note that all of the AJ_ motors are 350 ci.

Re: Help Identify This Replacement SBC
Good information. I guess they slapped a 4bbl on it for the swap. Anyone known if the LF-5 RPO motor is 4-bolt?
