Fender Welt or No Fender Welt? - Poll Thread

Ok, so a group of us are wondering what the dominant practice is for those that have re-painted their trucks. Yes, we know they never came with it. But they were tools, working vehicles. No one ever knew they'd be anything else.

Feel free to state your reasons, but please vote.

I think it depends on how the truck is going to be used. For a daily driver, I think for sure install the welt. If it is more of a limited use vehicle with a nice paint job, I'd say leave it off - looks better, in my humble opinion.

I honestly see no reason, never ran it.

I know I am in the minority but I would take it back to original and put the fender welt in.

I voted for and used it, on the '51 - it gives that 'finished' appearance. Altho it isn't 'finished'....

If you can match a polyester base and then a clear coat on the welting, it should be plenty flexible to follow all the contours.

Re: Fender Welt or No Fender Welt? - Poll Thread

Poll is showing why this question never gets somewhat resolved. For as many of these trucks that are out there we're still relatively near 50-50!

Right now I'm leaning toward No. But even if I wanted some, where can you buy it in a selection of colors?

Colored welt is made by sewing vinyl of the right color around a piece of cord. Whoever is doing your upholstery could do it for you.
Or you could paint it like suggested above. The new paints are very flexible especially with flex agent added.

Welts seem necessary to help conceal the poor fit of after market chinese fenders and other badly made "replacement" parts.

^^ MAYBE welt would work for that, I'm not so sure. But this would also mean there's no need for welt if you have stock fenders.

I think many don't use it. I do know i bought some recently for my build and it must have been on the shelf for decades. Some of it opened up dried glue fell out along with the inside bead.

Re: Fender Welt or No Fender Welt? - Poll Thread

Late to the party but 40 years of experience with these trucks says that no fenderwelt lets water and mud and what not come up though the space between the fender and the bed if you don't have something to seal it between the fender and the bed or the fender and the cab. I know those So Cal and Arizona boys never drive their trucks in the rain but the rest of us tend to get caught out in a thunder storm at least once a rod trot season even with the best of weather reports.

Sorry Mr. 48 but the lack of puncuation in your post makes me unable to understand if you're saying you're in favor of welt or not in favor of welt?
