Fan shroud question.

My recently purchased 79 k10 is my first square body. I was having a engine vibration problem and it turned out to be my fan having removed it and then test ran the engine . I replaced the fan with another one and the vibration was still there. The truck has the wrong radiator in it for sure it was like this when I bought it last month. I believe it's a 6cyl. Radiator it's a lot smaller than what looks like should go there . My fan is completely inside the shroud and I know they are supposed to slightly outside the shroud or they cause turbulence. My question is what parts could I have wrong? It's a factory v8 350 truck and I know it's supposed to have a long style water pump do I have the wrong shroud?

Re: Fan shroud question.

You have the wrong shroud and upper rad mount for that rad. I would consider swapping the radiator.

If there a spacer between the fan and the water pump?

Here is a pic of my 75 from a similar angle as your pic. Looks like a PO made something work in yours. Is that a wood block in yours?

Re: Fan shroud question.

I know the radiator doesn't match the shroud and the mount , but does the shroud and mount match? The fan is to far inside the shroud. Yes previous owner made that radiator work.

Re: Fan shroud question.

Hmm, I'm not sure, but after a closer look it does look a little deep. By now most of these trucks have had all kinds of parts swapped and some of the 81-87 shrouds look similar and may even bolt up but depending on the engine and factory options they can be very different. Neither one of my 79s have the taller radiator or I would measure the depth of the shroud for you.

Re: Fan shroud question.

Looks like the top cover is from a 81 up big block truck(like mine).
Radiator is from a 90's(with plastic tanks).
Don't know about the shroud.
I would also check the pump shaft for slack in the bearing.Or even a bent shaft.Maybe the fan clutch,if it has one.
Mike.

Re: Fan shroud question.

2nd the thought that your radiator is correct assuming the width is proper. Looks to be very close to mine in height.

Might pull the top support bracket and shroud and see if the vibration goes away. While it is off, check for bolt holes to mount a top bracket like mine. If they are there, see if you can find a proper support and shroud for your existing radiator.

Probably should check the bottom supports while you are at it. Hard to tell how far the "make it work" job went.

BTW, mine has a factory type fan clutch and original 7 blade fan.

Re: Fan shroud question.

Without the shroud there is no vibration, even with the fam on.

Re: Fan shroud question.

Here is a picture of my 1978 setup. It has option "V01 heavy duty radiator". My 1979 was identical to this. So it appears that your shroud and brackets are correct, but you have the wrong radiator. The vibration could very well be from a worn out fan clutch.

Tried 2 separate fans and clutches. Vibration isn't there with either fan/ clutch as long as shroud is off. Your fan I partially outside shroud how it should be , mine is completely inside

Re: Fan shroud question.

Mine doesn't have a fan clutch, only a spacer that is just a hair short of 2".

Re: Fan shroud question.

I would think you might be time and money ahead by just ordering an hd radiator and keep your shroud and mounting set up. Once everything is correct, then chase the vibration, or it might be gone by then!

Re: Fan shroud question.

might want to check the water pump for a bent shaft or worn bearings.

I once had one that was physically wobbling but did not leak. Worth a check.
