Steering Gear Box
The steering on my Blazer has become really sloppy. I am thinking it is the steering gear box since everything else looks solid and I can move the steering shaft by grabbing it when the truck is parked with the engine off.
I call the local parts store and they can't get the gear box. http://www.buyautoparts.com/ has a remanufactured listed for $165 + free shipping and a $125 core that I'll have to pay return shipping. 1 year warranty Is there a better place to get remanufactured 4wd gear box?

Re: Steering Gear Box
$190 including shipping on Ebay. Autozone was about the same. Both would take a week to 10 days.

Re: Steering Gear Box
Did you go with a quick ratio?

Re: Steering Gear Box
I only looked. I have WAY bigger problems to deal with before I buy another part to sit around and trip over. I only asked about factory replacements for my 72 blazer.
I'm no expert on this but I have been led to believe that the quicker steering is not good because it reacts poorly. Mine will have fat tires so I'm sticking with the slow gear. |

Re: Steering Gear Box
Thanks. I'll probably stick with the stock.

Re: Steering Gear Box
Red head steering gears in WA are well reviewed here. I have one yet to install. I sent my stock box to them and they turned it around in two business days. Wes at Classic Heartbeat stocks them for sale.

Re: Steering Gear Box
Have done 2 redhead gears in the past 4 months. Got standard ratio on the 4x4 and replaced the lower column bearing and it is tight with no slop now. It still wanders with larger tires, but I don't need to babysit like I used to.
They have solid feedback on every forum I checked. |

Re: Steering Gear Box
My local parts store claims a backorder on the gearboxes and therefore can't get one for me. They did find one listed for an '86 that I'm going to try. From what I've learned, the same boxes were used well into the '90's... My box got tight instead of sloppy. Go figure. But at least my lifetime warranty (19 years on the current box) will pay off if this '86 one works.
