What carb to run.

I have a stock 283 motor. I want to get a edelbrock carburetor. What will be better a 500 or a 600? It dose not matter for the stock look.

I would use a 500. It would be easier to tune for a 283.

Either would be OK, if you are buying a new one, spend a little more for the 500CFM AVS version and electric choke #1801. You can tune when the secondaries come in on an AVS.

I run the Edelbrock 500 cfm (model 1404 and 1403 are the same but for manual or electric choke) and it is well suited for my 283 providing crisp throttle rsponse and good wide open performance. The thing is, these carbs are jetted for dual quad or high perfomance applications. In my case, the engine is only mildly built with an rv cam, 305 h.o heads, performer eps manifold, hei, etc so the carb was still a bit rich right out of the box. I promptly decided to lean it out by two stages in the cruise mode (just followed the directions and got the parts at OReilly's) and the throtle response got nice and crisp, and the gas mileage ain't half bad either.

Eddy carbs are unhappy with pressure above like 5psi. I'm using a Holley (low pressure version) regulator and have it choked down to about 4.5. I also set the float level a little lower than spec.

I know that the 600cfm carbs are jetted richer in the manual choke versions, I would imagine the 500s would be the same.

Do you have a 4bbl manifold already? If not, consider just rebuilding what you have...

I was going to get a electric choke. yes i got a 4 barrel intake it has a quadrajet but its junk.

If it's a spread bore manifold for a quadrajet, the Edelbrock carb will not bolt on.

Take a look at a JET quadrajet its available with electric choke , And is available in 3 different levels ,stage 1 stage 2 etc. It will fit your existing manifold and in my experience works very well. Im not a big fan of Edelbrock carbs … seem to have hot start issues especially with crappy ethanol fuel. Not bashing Edelbrock I use their heads and manifolds all the time just not a fan of their carburetors .

I would consider rebuilding the q-jet. A good running quadrajet it hard to beat. Edelbrocks are very easy to work on, but you have to deal with the fuel pressure issues and hard hot starts that they are known for.

I have always loved qjets. Ran them on every carbed gm Ive owned. Great carbs and highly tuneable. What I will tell you is this. If youre going to run a qjet, either buy a remanned one or have yours sent to a reputable qjet specific carb shop. I have a 283 in my 71 and I bought a new summit brand carb 500cfm last fall. It runs fantastic and was almost perfect out of the box. A quick jet change for elevation and vacuum tuning plus idle adjustment and I was done. It has been a great carb so far and is relatively cheap.

The carb on there is junk I was going to buy Edelbrock five or six hundred but I'm getting different opinions I didn't want to over carbureted so I thought maybe a 500 be good be rather under carbureted and over carbureted
