The same U-Joints for front and back of drive axle?
Hey there, I have a 1960 GMC 1/2 ton (1000 series) with a Dana 44 10 bolt diff.
I have the drive axle out and the u-joints out of that (both ends). The U-joints look the same, does anyone know if they are? I have been looking at parts sites and it seems that they only mention the rear u-joint. Which I believe is a spicer 1310. Does anyone know if the transmission end of the drive axle takes the same u-joint, since I'm not finding any differentiation on the usual suspects parts sites. Thanks! |

Re: The same U-Joints for front and back of drive axle?
I would try and measure both joints to compare. Pay close attention to cap to cap measurements on each joint as well as cap size and c clip orientation. Mine had conversion joints on both ends of the DS which made finding replacements and agonizing lesson on u joints. I has a T221 transfer case and a Dana 60 rear. The rear joint had both different cap to cap dimensions as well as different cap sizes.
Thats interesting on the Dana 44 rear axle. I never knew that they were used on GM trucks in that era. Always thought that they got the HO52 axle. Maybe a GMC - Chevy thing?

I do believe the GMC's and Chevy's were different in this regard. I think a lot fo the driveline/drivetrain components are more different than similar. Thanks Again! |

Re: The same U-Joints for front and back of drive axle?
Just an update for others in the future...
For my truck, with the dana 44 diff, this is what I had to order to replace both U-joints and pinion seal. pinion seal - Dana/Spicer 44895 u-joints (both) - Spicer 5-153X u-bolt kit - Spicer 2-94-28X torque for u-bolts that hold the u-joint to the differential yoke: 14-17 Lb. Ft. I did find an alternate pinion seal from O'Reilly's that would've worked. It was: National Seal 5778 Thanks for the input! |
