fan
49 ad with stock 283 aluminum radiator. can I run an engine driven fan
with offset fan shroud. [fan is low on radiator] I have room but my buddy said an offset fan shroud might not pull enough air from the top of the rad. I think it will work, what do you guys think |

I did for years with no shroud. First with the stock core and then with a 2-1/2 ton truck core in my tanks. I never had a cooling problem with that setup until the radiator died of old age and probably vibration as I had left some of the support off in the subframe swap.
I'm thinking that the stock 1-1/2 ton shroud I have out here isn't centered on the core. I did without problems. Stock radiator with a 283 and I am thinking a fiberglass flex fan. I went though a lot of those as they were always cracking blades. A shroud with an offset hole should work ok if it is designed so the air can flow to the fan. This is the stock shroud on a 1-1/2 ton. Note that there is a pretty decent space between the shroud and the core. At least 2-1/2 inches of space for the air to move in the corners.

hot water is at the top. best place to cool it. I've got a 54 with MII clip and SBC under construction right now, when I saw how low the fan was I ordered up a 16" electric. installed but not driven yet. It has A/C and it's like 108 outside so it won't take long to find out.
