What type of block
Is there any way to find out if I have 2 or 4 bolt main, wihtout taking the oil pan off?

usually the only sure fire dead on way is to pull the pan and look

but even still some casting numbers could be either 2 or 4 bolt the only sure fire way is to pull the pan. if the engine is running good or in a truck it doesnt matter much anyways a 2 bolt is plenty strong for about any street bound motor. and in some cases the 2 bolt is stronger than the 4 bolt

I think if the last 4 numbers are 0010, it`s a four bolt.

My spare 350 is 0010 and its a 2 bolt, but you can get a 2 bolt Splayed at the machine shop and its supposedly stronger than a 4 bolt.

3970010 is a very common block, and can be 2 or 4 bolt.....the 1 in my Longhorn is a 2 bolt block(also 10/20 high nickel). i also have 2 spare blocks with the same casting # , & they are also 2 bolt blocks. the best way to know for sure, is pull the pan ,as cableguy suggested

Ive owned 4 0010 blocks...all were 2 bolts

Guess I got lucky, my 0010 is a 4 bolt. I was told that 0010`s were all 4 bolts, wan`t sure that`s why I said "I think".

I guess cableguy is right, the only sure way to tell is remove the oil pan.

yea jim i have had 3 010 block that are 2 bolt and in the machine shop i work in have seen who knows how many that are also 2 bolt so im thinking its less than half that are 4 bolts
