Electronic Speedometer
I can get an electronic speedo from a Suburban for my swap. They do not have the whole cluster. Is it possible to mount the speedo in my cluster and make it work simply by supplying power and ground and the signal from the ECM??
Or do I have to find an entire cluster somewhere. |

Re: Electronic Speedometer
I suppose its possible, but there's a lot of things that are different, from the way it bolts to the cluster to the printed circuit on the back. I would save the headache and find a complete cluster if it were me.

Re: Electronic Speedometer
I was lucky enough to find a complete cluster.
Wiring is not really my thing. |

Rich, here's the pin placement for the electronic speedo cluster that you need to change your connecter to;
Pin# color 1 Lt. Green Hi beam 2 Blk. Ground 3 Lt. Brown Oil press. sender 4 Pink/Blk +12V Ign. Feed 5 Dark Brown Low Volt light 6 Not used 7 Not used 8 Turquoise Coolant temp. 9 Lt. Gray Illumination (dash lights) 10 Lt. Blue L/H turn signal 11 Drk. Blue R/H turn signal 12 Not used 13 Yellow Seat belt reminder 14 Pink Fuel Sender 15 Lt. brown/White Brake (E-Brake) 16 Drk.Brown/White "Service Engine Soon" 17 Pnk./Blk +12V Ign. Feed 18 Lt. Blue/Blk VSS from PCM Last edited by LeesTruk; 08-20-2017 at 12:41 PM. |

Re: Electronic Speedometer
The ambiguous answer is yes to both. When you pull your harness connecter out of your current cluster, the wiring should have the same coloring as that of the '90 harness (at least it was in my '80), but you'll see that wires will have to be rearranged into different locations, when comparing "the list" to what you have now. The pins are easily extracted, and yes, the harness connecter block fits both clusters.
Digging out my notes from my build, your original harness wiring should be similar to this; Pin#...Color.......Function 1........Lt.Grn.....Hi Beam 2........Gray.......Illumination 3........Blk.........Ground 4........Pnk/Blk...+12v Ign. feed 5........Tan.........Oil Pressure 6........Pnk/Blk +12v Ign. feed 7........Pink.........Fuel level 8........Blk..........Ground 9........Dk.Grn.....Temp. 10......Blk...........Ground 11......Lt.Blue......L/H Turn Signal 12......Dk.Blue.....R/H Thurn Signal 13......Yel............Seat belt Reminder 14......Empty 15......Dk.Blue......Choke Ind. or Empty 16......Pnk/Blk......+12v Ign. Feed 17......Tan/Wht.....Brake Indicator (E-Brake) 18......Pnk............Fuel sender |

Re: Electronic Speedometer
Almost 2 years has gone by..Wow. Finally got around to installing the 1990 cluster while in the process of doing a Vintage air install. Got the plug repinned and wired in the speedo. Much to my amazement everything works! I only wish I had upgraded the light bulbs, as it is a bit dim for my ageing eyes.
