Ignition rod connection to the lock cylinder
Hello gents I have a bit of a problem with my 1976 k10 I attempted to start my truck and it felt like it was binding so I re attempted to start it and heard a pop and now the key free spins so I replaced the cylinder and it does the same thing. When I twister the key the rod doesn't move has anyone had this issue and fixed it ? I hate having to push on my ignition box to start the truck. And it instead of fixing it has anyone added a push button start and kill switch to the truck instead ?

Re: Ignition rod connection to the lock cylinder
Been there, done that. Either your sector gear stripped or the metal pinon gear rod broke. In my case, both have happened at different times. Sector gear I fixed. Had a local steering column specialist company fix the broken rod. They did on site repair for about $80.
When my ignition switch start contacts failed, wired around with a push button. The push to crank is simple, just wire the push button in place of the start contacts on the ignition switch. Turn key to the run position and push button to start. Turn key off to kill. In your case, you would have to replicate all of the contacts on the ignition switch, not just the ignition run/start stuff. |

Re: Ignition rod connection to the lock cylinder
Yes. A rod from the key cylinder turns the gear. If you dig into it that far, be sure to tighten the 3(4?) screws that are there. If they are loose, your steering column will have slop.
From your description, sounds like the pinion gear rod broke. Unless you know it is fairly new, might consider installing a new turn signal switch while you replace the rod. You will pull the switch while getting to the rod. |

Re: Ignition rod connection to the lock cylinder
Same thing JUST happened to me, thanks to the local dealership that was doing an inspection on my truck. The guy must have put the crank on my ignition.
Anyway, is this the replacement parts kit? Dorman 83211
