Back up light switch on Muncie SM 465
Am putting a 72 Longhorn drive line back together and today encountered a devilish little prob - the two-pronged connector that slips onto the reverse switch on the side of the trans simply will not go on. Although a bit beat up, it is a typical two prong connector - one horizontal tab and one vertical and the connector slips into the switch base. But not today.
I've tried the on-line parts houses for a new switch/connector - no luck so far. Will this be a dealer-only item? Hope not. I'd even love to find a decent used connector pig-tail if anyone has a suggestion. There should be one on must old wiring harnesses. Thanks for any ideas.

Are you saying that everything is intact, but you can't force the connector itself onto the switch mounted into the transmission? If so, I had the same problem with mine (I think the plastic connector shrinks with age?) I was able to get mine on by taking a small, very fine file and just slightly chamfering the edge of the switch where the wire plugs on. I also put a little dab of grease on the inside of the connector housing. Doing these two things allowed the wire to be forced on.

Thanks, saxart. I looked at that tight fit and thought about what you did, and I appreciate your knowledge/experience - good to know that someone else ran into the same prob. . That plug/socket had not been apart for 45 years and it simply does not want to go back together. Probably cooked a bit and plastic shrunk.
Visually, everything lines up and it looks like it should go, but I did not want to force too much and break something. I will be giving your fix a try. Thanks again. P.S. Does "saxart" convey a sax player?

Well, your advice was good and, with considerable effort. I got the connector onto the switch. That location made it a challenge and it still seemed not quite tight, so I taped it for good measure. Thanks.
I like Selmers.
