61 C-10 windshield install difficulties

I went to install the original windshield back in my 61 and I spent several hours trying to get the rubber gasket on the windshield with no success.

I don't want to break the glass but I can not get the rubber spread enough to go over the glass.

I have put these type in on my previous 56 truck and 55 car.

I bought a classic industries gasket which reads precision on it.

Has anyone had similar problems?

Do I need a better quality gasket i.e. Steele? $100

Is there a tip or trick someone could share with me?

What's the Precision part number you're using? Precision is very good, btw. I'm wondering if you're trying to use a 64-66 on it instead of a knee knocker.

Re: 61 C-10 windshield install difficulties

I don't have the # handy but it looks long enough for the wraparound, my problem is spreading the groove or slot enough to go over the edge of the glass, its very stiff.
I set it out in the sun, warmed with a heat gun, cut down two putty spreaders and put them on each side of the glass with them in the groove and tried to slide the rubber on to the glass with no success, there is no way the corners will survive the amount of pressure I put on the flat sides.

Re: 61 C-10 windshield install difficulties

i had that problem with one for a '61 Corsair station wagon. No WAY it was going on.
Called them, had the correct part number, correct markings on the rubber... it was the right one.
Sent it back, they sent me a new one--same part number, same markings on the rubber, same look, same corners, and it practically jumped out of the package and wrapped itself around the edge of the windshield. They couldn't explain it, and neither can I.
I wonder if the cooling rate of the rubber might sometimes affect the fit or shrinkage. I dunno. But two "identical" gaskets from the same manufacturer, and one wasn't going on, the other fit perfect.

You might be dealing with the same thing here.

Re: 61 C-10 windshield install difficulties

I had no problems with the Precision gasket in my 63. Local glass shop with an old school brother installed my windshield in 30 minutes.

I suspect something is not correct with your gasket.

Buy a seal from Steele Rubber. The cheap imported crap is worthless.

Re: 61 C-10 windshield install difficulties

I bought one from Steele, got it on the glass but still couldn't get it in the truck.
Had a glass guy come out and install it, went right in.
Thanks

Re: 61 C-10 windshield install difficulties

Mind me asking what it cost to have somebody install it? I'm about ready to have mine put in and just want to make sure I'm in the ballpark price wise.

Thanks! I found a place that came highly recommend today that's going to do mine next week for $267 parts and labor at my place. Lifetime warranty on seal and labor. Seems like a decent deal!

So a new '60-'63 windshield with new rubber installed for $267?

Mine's a '66 but otherwise yes. Will be curious to see how it goes...

Re: 61 C-10 windshield install difficulties

The '64-'66 windshields are much cheaper than the '60-'63 windshields. That's why I was questioning your price since this thread is about the '60-'63 windshields.

No idea what brand mine is, but it went on really easily. It leaks like fu*king crazy. It's so loose I can lift it away from the glass with my fingers. I can also manipulate it a little up/down. Glass guy provided the glass and seal. I'm wanting to get it redone, waste of $250.

Yep, I’m in the same situation. I bought windshield rubber from LMC. It leaks like crazy too. Won’t do that again!

I will be going with precision on the next go around.

Re: 61 C-10 windshield install difficulties

a couple of yrs ago my 61 was around $170 plus install. Total was $263.00. windshields are suppose to be sealed with a sealer, not just the rubber.
