Tailgate Top Metal Strip

I've researched a lot on here and cant seem to find a definite answer. I've seen some builds where the metal tailgate strip is not used and some where it is used. I'm referring to the strip of metal that screws to the top of the tailgate that I assume adds additional sealing with the hard top. LMC refers to it as rear liftgate stop in their catalog. My question is: Is it actually needed if I plan to run the hard top and is its purpose just to create a better seal with the hatch door? Thanks for any help.

I would think you would want it in order to create a better seal or you may suck in exhaust fumes. If not using the hardtop then no need for it.

Thats the strip that cuts into the back of your legs when sitting on the tailgate. I vote for no strip if running a soft top.

It prevents the lift gate to open, if you have the top hatch (hard top) locked up.

I think you meant to say that it prevents the tailgate from opening when the hardtop liftgate is in the down position and locked. I agree with this, as it doesn't do much to improve the seal.

I always have mine on when the top is on. In the picture you can clearly see the floor through the gap without the metal strip installed.

Thanks for all the replies. I was thinking about not putting one back on due to it looking better with the top off but with me planning on running the hard top during the winter and actually driving the blazer it seems it's better to use it. Thanks again.
