Correct oil filter?

1969 gmc - Need a little help as I have an oil leak and believe it might be coming from the rear pan or oil filter. I have often suspected the oil filter as it seems too small but unsure if I’m getting the right size. The Po said it was a remanufactured engine which came from a mid 80 Scottsdale. It’s a v8 with block # m09092vp and use Fran xg5.

Any help if I’m using the right size is appreciated. I tried to decode it with no luck. It could also be an oil pan seal as the valve cover gasket is dry.

Thanks

Re: Correct oil filter?

Most likely the pan seal, make sure the 2 small bolts are snug. Get a better quality filter next time like a Wix

Re: Correct oil filter?

Chevy used the same filter from 1968 up to just about present time on all the small blocks and big blocks. Anyways I think the number is a 1060

Re: Correct oil filter?

Where's the leak? That small drop on the torque converter cover? Oil always goes down so start at the top. That looks more like an intake manifold leaking.

For my '71 4x4 (350) , '71 Chevelle (350) and even my retired from work '88 Caprice (305) I use the Wix 51060 filters.

Post NAPA / WIX Oil Filters

51060 is NAPA's number ~ they add a 5 to oil filters, a 3 to fuel filers and so on .

WIX is very good stuff indeed . fram is crap, ever since Allied Signal bought them decades ago .

You actually have a lot of wiggle room on oil filters once you've matched the gasket and threads .

I wait until they're on sale then buy by the box full as I put on a lot of miles and so every 3,000 miles like clockwork comes another HOT oil & filter change .

Re: Correct oil filter?

What's wrong with FRAM? That is what is on the side of my truck.

Next filter will be a Pureolator though or whatever those are called.

I use Pureolator on my Honda Accord.

Nevermind....

I may be changing oil filters sooner than I thought.

Re: Correct oil filter?

Bought a wix filter tonight. While under there I noticed all my oil pan bolts were really lose. I tightened all of them up but think it might be a rear gasket. I will check in a week or so. Good project for early spring if it’s the rear gasket. Thanks for all the advice.

Re: Correct oil filter?

Kinda hard to get te wrong oil filter for a small block Chevy, unless you tell them the wrong vehicle. The 6.2/6.5 diesels even use the same filter. It's not like we're talking Desotos (Mopar) and Edsels (Ford) here.

Re: Correct oil filter?

If you didn't find the leak yet, check out the oil pressure line on the back of the block. Especially if its an aftermarket gauge with the plastic line.

Post Re: Correct oil filter?

When Allied Signal bought the fram line they immediately changed the medium used inside the filters where no one could see ~ cheaper crap that doesn't filter as well and lower build quality too . they save money and you, the Customer don't get what you paid for .

Purolator filters are generally very good too ~ when you open the box you'll often see the filter was made in Europe or Israel and are often major non American brands .

As far as oil pan leaks, plan on changing that gasket sooner than later ~ once it's compressed, tightening the bolts will usullay deform the lip of the metal pan and often cause worsening leaks .

Not a big job to replace the old gasket, messy yes .

Get a narrow (1" or narrower) metal blade scraper and a 32 Oz. ball peen hammer before you take it apart .

The ball peen hammer will allow you to fix the deformed oil pan holes easily .

I often find Thrift Stores have tons of old, worn towels they can't sell and are happy to sell you a garbage bag full for a few dollars .

Ask the Manager .

Re: Correct oil filter?

My first oil change on mine after I bought it - found out the spin off filter adapter that was put on is different - had the threads for the filters such as fit the Fords. I replaced mine with a Wix - really like them...
