Steering column length

I have a 48 GMC with no steering column, what length of after market columns do you use?

Re: Steering column length

What steering box or front suspension do you have? Do you want tilt, auto column shift? That makes a difference. If you want tilt, and auto column shift then a 32" might be good.

Re: Steering column length

I am using a GM tilt, column shift in my 1950 with M2 front. My column is 32"
from top of bell below steering wheel to end of shaft. It goes through firewall just enough for shifter linkage, and the shifter arm is close to the dash. I could not use a shorter column.

I agree, you won't be sorry at 32 inches.

Re: Steering column length

leaving just enough room under the floor for the shifter linkage leaves you the best options for space in the engine compartment. the length on the inside of the cab depends on the steering wheel dish options you like and also the seat height you like. if you have a wheel with the same dish then you can easilt figure it out by using a length of abs pipe pushed up through the floor. tape the wheel to the end and adjust till it feels right to you. then measure how long you need from the wheel, through the floor, and add some length for the shifter mechanism. you can also use that sort of mock up technique for the steering shaft required to connect the steering rack or box.

Re: Steering column length

Steering wheel will be a comfort issue, but I could not use a shorter column because shifter linkage is close to floor like I wanted, and shifter up top is close to dash. I have the top mounted close under the dash, no drop.

Re: Steering column length

I will try mocking it up and see how it feels. Thanks again.

Re: Steering column length

What length of column would you suggest with floor shift and stock OEM bench seat? I have TCI MII front clip & possible column drop? There is a killer sale on 30" flaming river columns right now until the end of the month and I'm debating picking one up. $399 FR20005 column at KMStools

Re: Steering column length

I chatted with a guy on the flaming river website. He recommended the 30" column. The $399 price tag is the best I've seen around so I think I'm going to jump on it. I have a S10 column in there right now but i dont like the look of it and I think the 4-way flasher button is broke.

Re: Steering column length

I have a 30-inch column in mine, but that's really a minimum. I'm wishing I had a couple of inches more (no comments please!). It depends on the dish of your steering wheel whether or not you will have a comfortable driving position. Plus if you have tilt and telescopic they take up a lot of room. You gotta also have room for the column shift to clear the dash. 30 will work, but that 2 extra inches sure gives you more mounting options.

Re: Steering column length

I have floor shift so hopefully I'll have enough room. Haven't decided on a steering wheel as of yet so hopefully it will be long enough at 30". Maybe others might chime in on this topic?

The a flaming river 30" floor shift column for $399 is a killer price.
