Pulling the engine?

I need to pull out the engine to get to the motor mount and the bell housing. What's the best way to do this? This is a 283\sm420 4 speed.

Lots of variables. K.I.S.S.
Hood off, radiator out

Re: Pulling the engine?

Is the trans able to stay in? On mounts? Or you have to drop trans first. Remove fan for clearance. Remove wires. Remove radiator to be safe.
Front clip can be off in matter of 8 or so bolts. Just depends how far you want to go.

I've had good success pulling them out together, and think it's the quickest easiest way.

Re: Pulling the engine?

I guess my question should've been is it easier to unbolt the bell housing from the block first and then pull the engine or keep the engine\bell housing together. The high hump has been removed already so bolts are accessible. I'm leaving the transmission in the truck unless somebody can use it.

Unless the c30s are configured differently than the c10s, you won’t be able to leave the transmission in the truck, it hangs from the bell housing. It really depends on how you want to do it, I’d rather pull it apart on the ground in front of the truck than underneath it.

Re: Pulling the engine?

Take the front clip off. It makes things SO much easier, and doesn't take too long if you don't have to deal with rusty fasteners.

Re: Pulling the engine?

Like everything everybody has an opinion, here's mine:
I like to drop the trans first (but leave the bell housing) If you make a long dowel to replace one of the upper 4 mounting bolts, then it can slide back without putting a lot of pressure on the input shaft
Now just remove two bolts holding the engine mounts together, and two holding the bell housing to the frame. at this point the engine won't fall but can be lifted free.
Remove fan and radiator.
If you get a tilt type attachment that allows you to tilt the engine as it comes out, you won't have to remove the hood, and it can all be done with no help ( can't remember the official name of the tilt gizmo, but cheap to rent or buy and well worth it)
Good luck, take your time and don't put your self between the ground and anything heavy
Tom

Re: Pulling the engine?

So the engine is unbolted from everything: the bell housing, motor mount, exhaust, etc, but still isn't loose. Do I have to unbolt the pressure plate from the flywheel?

I'm trying to leave the bell housing and transmission in the truck for now, just trying to get the 283 out and moved to the barn while I have the engine hoist rental available.

Re: Pulling the engine?

possibly sticking on the dowel pins...or pilot bushing...sometimes you have to get a little violent with it...you don't have to take out bellhousing bolts
looks like you've got a little gap ...might try prying it a little..its got to go straight out until it comes loose,,,to much side or up pressure will cause it to bind

Mongo, got it out, it was the violence that did it. Thanks!

Re: Pulling the engine?

I see that your '62 C30 does not have the boxed frame typical of a '60-'62 C10/20. Does your C30 have the torsion bars or coil springs up front?

It has the torsion bars. May change over to the 73 to 87 8 lug front suspension eventually
