Re: 1958 "SPECIAL" Paint?
The 454 that's in there now should be putting out a little more power, maybe 135 or 140...

I DONT know for certain but a guess is the Palamino two tone that was a special anniversary combo. Just not sure if that was 58 or 59?

Re: 1958 "SPECIAL" Paint?
Palomino is a possibility. So is a custom, non oem offered color. More Palomino stuff:
This thread, like a couple others, mentions that SPECIAL was marked on the Palomino trucks, but his has 331A. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=542434 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...light=palomino http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...light=palomino http://www.1955gmc.com/1957palomino.html http://oldchevytrucks.com/blog/index...-gmc-palomino/ Last edited by 1project2many; 04-08-2018 at 12:03 AM. |

Re: 1958 "SPECIAL" Paint?
It could mean a "special combination like the palomino or it could mean a special order govt or corporate color.
I'd think knowing the original color of the truck would be a good start. The asphalt company that bought out one of the local road building companies a few years ago has all of their trucks a special corporate color and they come from the factory that color. I looked on the GM Heritage pfd for 58 and it doesn't even show standard colors let alone mention anything else.

I found this pic that was taken during initial tear down, you can see the same color in the door jamb area and on the firewall showing through the black paint. Also attached is a pic of the color found up under the dash.

have you tried contacting the GM heritage center? they may be able to tell you. they also offer a package that basically gives description of what the truck came with from factory.

Re: 1958 "SPECIAL" Paint?
I purchased a parts truck for my '57. It was originally an Army truck - had an Army logo on the door, I.D. tag on the glove box door, and numbers painted on the bumpers. It too had the paint color noted as "SPECIAL" ono the door jamb plate. I can only assume this was for the Army green it was originally painted. Therefore I would say it was for any non-standard color trucks were painted at the factory.
