Contractor cap on a stepside????
Hey all,
So my 1977 k10 has become my daily driver...again. Living in the NYC area I like to leave and be outdoors on my days off. With a 3 year old pit I like to be able to sleep in the truck as it saves cash and most places don't like her. Currently, I have a leer truck cap off a GMT400. It fits okay, but organization is an issue and I hate the rear lifting hatch. I want to put a contractor cap on my bed with the barn doors. Has anyone done this? Would a cap off a ranger or similar size truck work? I will be doing the measurements but just curious to hear if this had been done. In in ideal world I could keep my tail gate and still have the barn doors. Thanks for any input Posted via Mobile Device Last edited by 84 400; 04-14-2018 at 11:10 AM. |

Re: Contractor cap on a stepside????
So if anyone wants to do this it can be done. I need to modify my bumper but this cap is off a late 99’s ford f150 flair side.
More info in my build thread.

Re: Contractor cap on a stepside????
Pictures would help quite a bit. I'm confused on the terminology "Contractors Cap" or are just referring to a camper shell

Re: Contractor cap on a stepside????
I went into your build post and didn't see any current photos of your truck. Can you post them here?

Re: Contractor cap on a stepside????
I recall seeing utility company trucks in the 70s with stepside and the type of cap you are describing. So, I say it is doable, but I don't know if you have a true stepside cap. This sounds extreme, but getting a fleetside shortbed and replacing your stepside would not be too difficult. You can still find square shortbed trucks in the desert southwest. In fact, I would just get another truck if it is really important to you and sell your current truck for good $$. An 8 foot bed would be much better for what you have in mind.

Re: Contractor cap on a stepside????
^^^^ I must disagree.
I have a 1995 Dodge dually long bed and like the shortbed for the smaller size and ease with which it can navigate the trails. To me the stepside is the only way to go for a short bed. I know many prefer the fleet side but I just dig the stepper. Here stepside beds are way cheaper then fleets.

Re: Contractor cap on a stepside????
The build of this cap should be in my thread soon. If my current employer does not pull through I plan to live in the as I travel the US this summer. Alaska and New Oreleans are my two must hit spots with a whole bunch in between.
