These GM trucks have a pretty good chassis already and you can buy most anything you could want to modify them so why spend the bucks for complete aftermarket chassis?

Almost $12,000.00 for a frame? I do not think my wife would approve too easily. Then again I could hide it from her...

I am in the process of building my 72 gmc with a roadstershop fast track chassis. Still mocking up, but here is a pic from a few weeks ago as a roller.

Not Roadster Shop, but I've got one from Scott's Hot Rods....

Roadster Shop has a good looking unit, but their lead time was extremely long when I started my build. Justin delivered his chassis in less than 6 weeks. You can also order one from No Limit, they make a complete chassis as well.

Why you ask? Well, I've done the whole update the original chassis thing. And yes, it costs less than a complete frame does. However, the front and rear wheels don't sit in the opening as nicely as with the Scott's frame, and there is no way the original frame is as strong as the new one. Plus, all your fabrication work is done. Motor mounts, trans mounts, brakes and lines, fuel cell and lines, fuel pump.... Everything is pre-worked out.

Finally, how does it drive? It drives great! Handles very well, and isn't as stiff as I thought it would be. I've driven over a thousand miles this summer (I know, not a lot but I'm not using it as a daily driver...) and it's comfortable, handles very well, and works! Stops on a dime, and corners great too!

Lastly, I would say the Scott's frame is more accurate than the factory frame. Everything lined up extremely easily. That is, motor mounts, cab mounts, bed mounts, everything went together exactly as it was supposed to.

While I won't say I would build another one like this, I'm not unhappy with the result. I don't race it, so ultimate handling wasn't my goal, but you can build one for whatever use you want.

I am very pleased with my frame from Scott's...

I haven't posted any of my progress pics on Instagram and haven't found the time to upload a build thread, but have a decent amount of pics and would be happy to answer questions if you have them.

Custom built frames are cool but just because you build one doesn't mean it will bring extra $$$ when you are ready to sell , I would think most guys working on these old trucks can't or won't pay the extra costs for a custom frame for their weekend toy and if your driving it everyday you'll really lose the value fast so you better enjoy it while it lasts . It's very easy to get pulled into the custom trap ,But if you really want to enjoy what your building keep the real budget in mind or you'll just find yourself trying to sell when it's finally done and being disappointed when it doesn't meet the dollar amount you thought it should and then your stuck with it and every mile you drive it cost you way more than you may like .Just be careful with your "real" budget because we've all seen thousands of projects never finished and sold just to recoup some of the cost before it ends in divorce...

WHY do we put trucks on custom frames??? I am compelled to relate this:

Why a custom chassis? Why spend the money? Again, everybody has an opinion, I have an actual story...

Christmas Day. Took the truck down off the lift. While it's down the wife wants to go for a ride. Fine with me. I'm driving reasonably (wife is with me after all) about 50 mph in a 55 zone.

Driving up Hwy 31. State 2 lane road near the house. Guy pulls out to pass oncoming car. I see him start, think he'll pull back in but no, he's in my lane close enough I can see his fingers on the steering wheel. He's in my lane about 100 feet in front of me... car he's passing slams on the brakes and I hit mine and dive for the shoulder.... By the time he goes by I'm in the grass and down to about 30 mph. My wife didn't even have time to scream...

I've owned over 100 cars in my life. I've had lots of modified cars. I've modified cars, and driven them hard. The frame from Scott's and the Wilwood brakes likely saved the life of not only me, but more importantly my beautiful wife.

I never thought of the frame as a safety item. Very few cars I've ever owned, and NOTHING else I've ever driven modified would have handled the emergency maneuver with better manners. No sliding, no "wiggles" from the chassis, nothing rubbing or no untoward behavior. No misbehavior from the brakes, it just bit hard and did exactly what was asked from it (at speed). I didn't appreciate how well the truck handled until later, when I was inspecting for damage and had time to actually think.

Modify anything you want. I'm a believer. If you're going to modify your vehicle, add high horsepower, raise or lower your vehicle, and ever need to make emergency maneuvers, make darn sure your truck can handle it.

I even wrote to Justin at Scott's and thanked him for saving the our lives.

That's why I put my truck on a custom frame..... has nothing to do with resale or budget. If you are adding horsepower and performance and are going to use it, I guarantee you it's safer... And, in the end unless you are an engineer and have crazy fabrication skills, it's also less expensive... Everything is engineered to work together. And it does.

Man!!! Now THAT is a testimony... I believe you would qualify for a Sales Manager position at Scotts if you so desired. Glad to hear everyone is ok, but, how is the truck? Were you able to avoid body damage? How much of the seat cover did you pinch off? Sounds like about a 9.9 on the Pucker Factor scale.

After seeing how flexible/flimsy these frames are without a cab or bed on them.
You would not question the why.
If I ever get to a cab off restoration of old blue one of these frames would be on top of the list.

How long have you had your Scott's chassis? I ordered one from Justin a while ago and I'm still working on my build. When I mocked up my bed I found out that it was built incorrectly. The wood floor interfered with the frame. Justin told me that the kick-up angle on the frame was wrong. He took my chassis back and rebuilt me a new one. They covered all shipping and replacement costs (which he should). Caused me a delay in my build, but they were very conscientious about the issues.

That’s nice to hear. The true measure of a company is not just the product they produce, but how they deal with any issues in relation to their product.

I’ve always heard great things about Scott’s.
