A Wondering Truck....help - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok, I have 70, c-10, SB, Toyo tires, lowered w/springs and spindles, 4 new ball joints,good front end alignment.....this thing wonders all over my lane of traffic, its not play in steering, (new close ratio), I have new Belltech shocks coming. Any body have any other ideas? people following me says looks like i been drinking....lol

Center link on backwards?

Damn, I wanted to be the hero that magically knew the center link was backwards, but I was too slow!

Happens all the time. If it's really darty it's becasue it needs way more caster, which is screwed up if that link is backwards.

If it's not backwards, still sounds like (if nothing is worn or defective) you need more caster.

Did you get an alignment spec sheet back when they were done? Usually if its backwards they can't get it in spec.

Also, if you don't have a front sway bar they are a big improvement for handling. The lack of one wouldn't cause what you are seeing though....

Probably just needs a toe in adjustment...I've found that especially after a spindle/spring drop, the toe in needs a little tightening up...I do it myself by scribing a line down the center of the of each tire. You have to jack up each tire, (or both if you jack up both sides from the crossmember) to scribe the line down the center of the full circumference of each tire. Center your steering wheel and lower the truck. Take a measurement between tires, front to front and back to back. The front measurement should read 1/8" to 3/16" of and inch less than the rear.

What is your truck wondering about?

I guess you mean wandering. Are all the other parts in the steering system new, or just what you mentioned? Have you looked underneath at all that while someone works the wheel? Was it aligned after the suspension work?

i HOPE WHEN GUYS RE DO THERE FRONT ENDS LIKE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS THEY DON'T GO THE CHEAP WAY.Me I'm a MOOG guy every thing needs a Zirk fitting so you can grease your upper and lower stuff makes your stuff last a mega long time.It might be a little more But well worth it

Should always change the U-bolts that hold the lower control arms. Had one snap on the front of the drivers side lower when I was making a turn towing my camper home from a trip and had the truck dart to the right and almost hit a pole! Was only going about twenty.

Moog parts are best, good to know you make a good choice, but that has nothing to do with this guy's issue. I doubt his new parts are worn out quite just yet. Any suggestions?

Everything pretty much new, How do I tell if link is backwards....

What size and backspace wheels and tires? I had a bad wandering issue on another vehicle, turns out it didn't like the amount of backspace on the wheels I was running. Wheels stuck out too far. I replaced every joint, bushing, couple alignments and couldn't get rid of it. Just out of curiosity I put he stock wheels/tires back on the front. Problem went away. So I found some rally wheels with a better backspace. No more two handed death grip.

It shows a pick of the OP truck with it on backwards and another with it on correct. If the tie rods are coming out the front, it’s backwards.
