Fuel Pump Inlet Leak
Per the title, I noticed the smell of raw fuel yesterday and found that my fuel pump is leaking at the inlet fitting. A pretty steady drip too. Tightened it up as much as I could before I thought it might pull threads, but it's still leaking. Definitely from the fitting, and not the hose. No visible cracks in pump body.
The pump is new (installed 2 weeks ago) and the fitting was taken off the old pump but in very good shape. Gotta get this stopped before I burn the thing down  .Any suggestions?

Check to make sure it has the correct fitting. If the pump has a flared tube type fitting you need to use a fitting that will seal on the "cone" in the inlet. I suspect you are using a tapered pipe fitting which seals in the threads but with a straight thread on the pump it never tightens up.

Flared pump with an inlet fitting to match. Thinking on it, I'm just gonna back it out a few threads and put some sealant on it. Fingers crossed.

Mark up the end of the fitting with a felt pen marker, thread it all the way in and back out, look to see if it is making full contact.
Only tapered pipe fittings should have sealer. It is too easy to contaminate the fuel, fuel pump and carburetor. Try a fitting from a different supplier if necessary. |
