Pulling Engine and Transmission Together Advice
Hi guys,
I appreciate everyone's help, but I don't need advice from the people that don't remove the engine and transmission together and feel like giving a lecture. I'm looking for advice from the people that do remove them together. I'm ready to pull my old 327 and I'm pulling the engine and tranny together. I have a 327 large journal and an NP435 (Chrysler Corporation's 4 speed with a granny gear). The cover on the NP435 is REALLY tall. I can't seem to get the cover off and my buddy said we could just drop the cross-member and it'll clear, but I was looking at it last night and the cross-member is riveted, not bolted. I realize that a picture would be extremely helpful here; however, I forgot to grab one before I left the house today. Does anyone know how to get the NP435 cover off or how to make it clear the firewall when pulling it while it's attached to the engine? Or is this plan hosed and I'll need to disconnect the two? Thanks for your help!

Yup!
Your plan is hosed! Trans won’t slide out the front with the crossmember in place. I’m affeared you’ll have to separate them. Been there, tried that! Bad part is to get at the rivets you need the motor/tranny out of the way. |

Damn... Well I guess that solves that. It'll probably be easier to do anyways, I was hoping there was some secret trick out there... Thanks for the quick reply!

Re: Pulling Engine and Transmission Together Advice
Could you do it if you pulled the radiator core support out so that the assembly doesn't have to tip so far? Breaking the two apart seems easier.

The good news is that those transmissions are only held in with 4 bolts.

Re: Pulling Engine and Transmission Together Advice
I believe he was referring to the number of bolts that hold the transmission to the engine. I if I remember correctly two from the transmission side into the bell housing, and two from inside the bell housing into the transmission.
The only secret trick I know of would be using a Blue Wrench.

Re: Pulling Engine and Transmission Together Advice
I removed the seat/carpet and hump cover. I had an unfortunate neighbor friend shimmy the transmission back from the bell housing from below. I helped support it from above as it came back. Engine comes out pretty easily after that.

Re: Pulling Engine and Transmission Together Advice
Since it sounds like you're going to separate the transmission from the engine, maybe this will help. I almost forgot about this write up I did awhile back.

Re: Pulling Engine and Transmission Together Advice
Wow, thanks for the write up and tips, guys!
I was able to locate the four bolts last night and I removed two of them, but now I've gotta dig out my dad's transmission jack from his garage... Thanks for everything, guys!
