1966 c10 chevy shifting issue.
I recently got a 1966 c10 stepside, it's a 3 speed on the floor with a hurst shifter. It starts up fine and will drive ok but I will have trouble shifting at time, we took apart the linkage and cleaned it but for some reason the gears get stuck, and when they do I look underneath the truck there doesn't seem to be any binding, however if you try to move the shifter it's extremely hard to do so and impossible to shift gears and underneath when try to move the shifter it looks as if the whole linkage is trying to shift gears. I have to mess with it and pull and tug for it to come lose and it takes a little bit, I have no idea what's wrong I'm not very mechanically inclined and hope I could find some help here, anything helps.

Take a pic of your shifter and linkage.
Easier to figure it out that way. |

Re: 1966 c10 chevy shifting issue.
Welcome aboard, could be worn in side. But I would 1st check your linkage rods, binding or the shifter location is causing it to drag...2nd person to move the shifter while you watch the action...also small bushings in the ends of the rods, plastic or rubber with metal sleeve. Post some photo's if you can....plenty of helpful people here.

Re: 1966 c10 chevy shifting issue.
This is a "69" 3 speed Saginaw, ITW shifter. I took this shifter off soaked, cleaned with PB blaster lubed it up. it works much better...alot of grit and dirt gets in between the layers of the shifting mech.

Re: 1966 c10 chevy shifting issue.
Notice there is a 3/8" dia bolt thru the levers & if this bolt is tightened too much the shifter will bind up.
There is also a hole in the lower levers for adjusting. You remove the shift rods from either the shifter levers or the trans & insert a 1/4" drill bit thru the hole then adjust the rods to fit back between the shifter & trans. |

Go with "andyh1956"; he's hit it right on the nose. If you've already asked a buddy to come over, go ahead and let him come watch, as you won't particularly need his help. And if any linkage rods have slop in the holes, by all means get new bushings as a/p suggested.
