New battery and new alternator-DEAD
I have a 1961 GMC pickup with a 305 V6. I installed a new battery and a new alternator. Started it up and watched my volt gauge go from 12 to 0. Anyone have any idea’s why this would happen? Thanks a lot!!

Re: New battery and new alternator-DEAD
Are you using the original style voltage regulator or are you using a newer alternator with an internal regulator?

Re: New battery and new alternator-DEAD
I once installed an internal regulated alternator in a truck that used an external regulated alternator. It worked. Until I got to the 1st car show I ever went to and there I was stuck. Yep, ya live and learn. Of course this was way before the internet.

Hahahaha! I’m using internal one. I just found the problem. A exposed wire was grounding out everything but thanks for replying.

Re: New battery and new alternator-DEAD
Sorry to hijack this thread but do I need to run a ground if I have an internally regulated one wire alternator?

Re: New battery and new alternator-DEAD
I think you want continuity from the alternator case to the battery negative. Probably you already have that through various grounds.
