A "few" Questions on pulling engine
Cut to the chase:
1. Bought engine crane/hoist and it came with the carb plate for pulling engine 2. Should I use bolts or stubs/nuts to bolt plate to intake? 3. What size and should I use grade 8 ? 4. When ready to re-install should I leave plate attached to original intake or should I install new hi-rise, install engine then put carb on after engine is put back in ? Leaning towards leaving hoist attached to engine&stand during cleaning as at my age it might take a while. 5. Pulling engine with tranny any suggestions on clutch kits (3 on tree). 6. Bought Pur15 to do frame (not complaining) turns out frame was way cleaner than it should have been. Thoughts on just sanding a bit and painting with good ole Rustoleum ? 7. Am an old fart as mentioned in several posts. Should I just start a restore posting and post picture's ? Not a Facebook type but this site is very helpful especially to someone like me that has not attempted something like this in over 40 years. |

Re: A "few" Questions on pulling engine
If there are no studs in the manifold use bolts & flat washers. 5/16 bolts coarse thread about 1 in. long prefer grade 8. be sure the bolts go in the manifold far enough especially if it an alum. manifold. Some manifolds back then had exhaust gas circulating around the back 2 studs. If that is the case make sure the studs are in good condition. Often they are corroded away.
If you put tape under the plate you can leave it on when you wash it & move it around. I like to leave the trans in unless you need to work on it or it will be in the way. Unless you are going raceing or pulling heavy loads, the regular parts store clutch s best. Some performance clutches take a lot of pressure to release witch makes it uncomfortable to drive & wears out the linkage & TO brg. I like Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer. Unless you get the frame sandblasted. I'm an old timer too. I just have to work a little at a time. George |

Re: A "few" Questions on pulling engine
TY for reply--usually 1 day on and 3 days off when working on it, as my friend Mr. Arthur Ritus like to visit right after. So far have seat and gas tank out floor pan in great shape and very little rust. Truck came with a 4X8 steel bed that has been removed along with tailgate. Next will be rear fenders.
Do not have a enclosed place to work on it so kind of at the mercy of Mother Nature. Take care, . |
