Generator with power steering combo
Hi, can anyone tell me if the old type of generator/power steering pump combo will produce enough pressure to operate a newer type of power steering box for my 59 3100?

Re: Generator with power steering combo
I would love to find references for flow and pressure for the Saginaw box and pump family. What I found this morning is assembled from a couple of different sources. It looks like the generator mounted pumps produced around 850 psi pressure at about 3-7 gpm. Later pumps build pressures anywhere from 1100-1600 psi at 1.6 to 3.0 gpm unless they're built to use with a steering rack then the pressure is closer to the old generator pumps.
The old systems used larger pistons at lower pressure so they are obviously biased toward higher flow and lower pressure. The generator pumps are vane pumps, and I'm betting that it's possible to increase the pressure. Some parts are here:https://www.danchuk.com/ItemForm.aspx?Item=13566 This video shows a pump being rebuilt. At 1:09 you can see the pressure relief spring. I would compare this spring to one from a later style pump. |

You're welcome. If you get this to work I'd love to hear / see the results.
