Re: Best sounding mufflers

I just replaced my too loud 14" Magnaflows with 18" Magnaflows. So far, much better but I haven't gone on a long roadtrip with the new ones yet.

I added resonators to my Flowmasters. Took away the highway drone on my LQ4.

Re: Best sounding mufflers

Check this youtube Flowmasters factory video out for comparison. By using the same car, they install 8 different Flowmasters on it so you can hear the difference in sound depending on the model of muffler.

Enjoy,

Re: Best sounding mufflers

If you want quiet while cruising and aggressive when you open it up, Dynomax Turbo 18" mufflers. Thats what I run on my v8 4Runner, they sound good.

I'll be running 3", 18" long glass packs on my LS swap 80, but I want it fairly loud.

Re: Best sounding mufflers

I have a big honkin like 24" Magnaflow. It is nice and quiet unless I really romp on it. Makes for nice comfortable drives when pulling the travel trailer. We can actually have a conversation in the cab.

Re: Best sounding mufflers

My opinion would be based on engine.

SBC - dynomax super turbos, magnaflows

LS - Flowmasters, Borlas

I have the Summit racing knockoff flowmasters and I like them. Not to loud unless you are really on it and have a nice deep tone at cruise.

Re: Best sounding mufflers

I vote Porter mufflers. portermufflers.com

Originally I had some cheap glass pack type muffler that was ear bleadingly loud. I mean it physically caused pain when you were hammering on it loud.

I think I saw guys recommend Porter on the HAMB website is how I come across them originally. They really claimed the sound was solid. Before I got them I had never heard of them. Now I am a big fan after using them. The truck just sounds right is best I can describe. This is on a 350, which maybe not applicable if you have something else.

Re: Best sounding mufflers

I just thought of something... my recipe for exhaust is a pair of Hookers and two 40ozs! Bahahahahaha - I don't care who ya are.... that's funny!

Here is my 67 - I start it up at 3:26 (my 85 sounds the same)

Re: Best sounding mufflers

Right or wrong I just put Dynomax Super Turbos on my LS build. I got the biggest case they offered. I have them on my K10 with a 350 and I like them, they settle down for cruising but are louder when you step on it.

Re: Best sounding mufflers

My son just put exhaust on his 81 with a stock 350. He went with 2.5" pipes with 14" Magnaflows. The truck has a subtle rumble at idle, a noticeable sound under part throttle and a nice bark at full throttle. The best part is being able to cruise at about 70mph and carry a conversation without yelling. The wind noise is worse than the exhaust. I'll try to get some sound clips/videos soon.

I had 50 series 3 chamber Flowmasters on my 86, and I hated them. The drone was almost unbearable in it. My brother had 40 series Flowmasters on his 83. The drone wasn't as bad as mine, but it was too loud for my taste.

That's really weird, the 50's are 3 chamber and made to eliminate the drone associated with the two chamber 40 series. My single 50 series is very quiet compared to the dual 40's in my 78.

Re: Best sounding mufflers

a huge chunk of inside noise has to do with muffler placement under the vehicle . further back or past the cab floor on trucks = less noise inside.

my 50 delta 3 chamber flowmaster is ready to be moved back more under my truck . its currently half under the cab . its nasty droan inside the cab . i stopped today and got a stick of 3" pipe from the exhaust shop so i can move it back more . and yes i have a tail pipe out from under the box and past the body now .

if moving it back dosn't work then bye bye muffler and hello stock style quiet one .

My 40s sit right under my seat and they sound great... no drone at all. I have dynamat on my floor too though but, even when I didnt in my 67, it sounded fine... I think it all depends on personal preference.

Some like it loud, some like it subtle... you gotta figure out which team you are on!
