Help with partial vin and engine I.D.
Hello! I'll keep this short. I've been looking all around the internet and haven't been able to find my suffix code listed anywhere, or a partial vin set up like mine. The engine is in my truck and I haven't been able to find/see any casting numbers. So far I have deciphered St.Catherines, Ontario, Nov 11, and that is probably mid 70's and up because of the short fat pad, about an 1 3/4" wide. I need some help, bad!
K1111ULA CG4122114 Thanks in advance! SubarcticPig 1971 K20 |

The trucks never were numbers matching like the muscle cars.

Re: Help with partial vin and engine I.D.
Is it a small block or big block? Does the VIN stamping on the block match your truck's VIN? VIN stamping on truck engines didn't start until '73 I believe. The 350 in my '74 has the matching VIN stamped in the block. Block casting number is on the left rear of the block where the bellhousing bolts up. These can be hard to see with the engine in the truck and usually covered in a layer of oil and dirt.
Pictures help a ton, can you post a picture of the suffix code? Are you absolutely sure its ULA and not UJA or something similar?

Block casting numbers are on the back of the block just below drivers side head near firewall.
Only thing I see with a ULA suffix is 1986 305. Is it a v8? What side is oil dipstick on? Post pictures of the motor and numbers and try to find the casting # |

Re: Help with partial vin and engine I.D.
It's a small block, and the numbers do not match to the truck. I was pokin around under there and couldn't find the castings, maybe a higher power light and cleaner would help me along. I will attempt to include a photo, but the stampings are pretty clear.

Re: Help with partial vin and engine I.D.
I just can't get any visual on the castings on the firewall side, I'm going to borrow a mirror on a stick and to see if that helps! There are castings on both lower sides of the block, I don't know if that would help. I'm assuming the 305 casting, which is on the driver's side, indicates that it is in fact a 305? I do not know what the other castings are, Which are on the passenger side.

Re: Help with partial vin and engine I.D.
There wasn't a VIN on old blocks. Not that I'm aware of anyway.
Between the part number, date codes and other items concerning the truck (e.g. SPID, build sheet etc.), you can determine whether or not your long block is "numbers matching". Codes off my BBC = "numbers matching".

Re: Help with partial vin and engine I.D.
Thank you everyone for your replies! MJN and BigBird coming through with a solid win. Funny story that truck got stolen, but I had some luck on my side. My starter was on it's way out the door and was only engaging the motor for a second tops, hard to start. Which is part of the reason for searching for the year and size. My roommate heard them f in around, chased them in his boxers but they got it in gear and got away. Called me up and I ran to the hood, then 4 of us started searching the neighborhood. The same roommate stumbled upon them parked, blocked them in, and got out with a machete and the rage of a thousand dissapointed gods. Scared the piss out of em as they were about to shoot up, they ran away leaving the drugs and all in the truck. Imagine telling the person who bought it off the showroom in 71 that story! I came out with my truck, no damage, a broken phillips, a broken flathead, and a vise grip! Lucky me.
I've been very busy. I apologize for the wall of text and lack of response. Thanks again for the help and I hope to do more than lurk. If you want to check out what I've been busy with, look up flugtag in St.Paul. We just got done building a glider, the team name is Her Smoke Rose Up Forever. I'm the pilot and we will be flying about 1:15 ish Minnesota time. Truck shenanigans soon, SubarcticPig |
