1966 C20 Rear Brake Dragging
Hi All,
I've been searching all day and haven't quite been able to locate the same problem. 66 C20 with an Eaton diff. Changed a leaking wheel cylinder with a new one on the passenger side rear. Adjusted the brakes with the drum off and it was a snug fit back on but didn't feel too tight. Problem is that after a test drive it is dragging. If I jack up the rear I can spin the wheel backwards very easily but not forwards without a lot of trouble. If I jam the brakes on I can't spin the wheel at all. Of note is that the handbrake works really well on the drivers side but barely on the passenger. I have a new handbrake cable. I don't remember anything coming out when I changed the wheel cylinder other than moving the shoes to the one side. I am wondering if it is the self adjuster or perhaps is it possible to put the hub bearing retaining nuts on too tight? Any ideas of what I can do to test would be great. Cheers in advance. |

The passenger side emergency brake cable is probably sticking.

I agree with Vince. Or the emer. brake cable may be adjusted too tight.

About the best advise I can offer is to pull both drums and carefully compare the assembly of the offending side with the side that releases properly. My guess is that something did not go back together correctly.

Re: 1966 C20 Rear Brake Dragging
Thanks gents.
I replaced the front handbrake cable and adjusted it pretty tight. It only goes up about three clicks. I'll back it off tonight and report back if successful to help any other searchers. Thanks. |

Re: 1966 C20 Rear Brake Dragging
Hi All,
Snuck out and gave it a try. Findings are: Brake pedal down and the wheel wont travel anywhere. Handbrake on and the wheel still turns but resistance Handbrake cable slackened off and cable loose to both sides and when on, turns backwards fine and still the same dragging/resistance going forward. So looks like I'll be taking it off. There is a slight weep from the 8 axle face bolts so it needs attention anyway. So close to finishing a project which is rare for me! This is the last hurdle. |
