Banjo Steering wheel removal

I recently picked up a 66 that had alot of work done to it but I dont feel it was done correctly so I need to go through several things to fix. One that I need to tackle is the blinker and horn issue. The blinkers do not shut off after turning every time only once in awhile and the horn beeps when i turn the steering wheel while driving randomly so i have the horn disconnected under the hood but i want that working as well...

As far as I know it had a tilt column from a 1974 monte carlo and a banjo steering wheel. I dont see how to remove this steering wheel, has anyone done this or know the trick?

Horn button/center should pop out on those and the bolts to remove it are there.

Re: Banjo Steering wheel removal

How do you pop the center out? I've tried spinning it, I've tried pushing down and spinning. Do I need to get a pick in there and pry it out? I dont want to damage it...

Re: Banjo Steering wheel removal

Use something mar-free as you can find. Got any of those plastic pry tools? Just a rag over the tip of a screwdriver if nothing else. Then you have a steering wheel puller, right?

What you'd find, more than likely, is the cancelling cam is broken, needs replaced. Often that's a sign of a worn front end or steering box that causes play in the steering wheel. All that might be fixed now. What happens is you put your signal on but you cancel it when correcting for play, so you hold the lever to keep the signal flashing. The cancelling cam ends up breaking

Re: Banjo Steering wheel removal

Some horn button removals on old cars have a hole in the rear that you poke a ice pick or the like into and that shoves the horn button off...

Re: Banjo Steering wheel removal

Right on top of the steering wheel proper, the whole center portion comes up and off. You need to pry up an edge of it to start.
That will reveal most likely nine allen head screws to undo to remove the wheel.
That whole billet unit is an adapter for the steering wheel to the column.
It will remove with the center bolt, use a socket and extension to get at it.
Ready? - Begin.
