Ignition Switch from column to dash
My 64 C10 came with a late 70's or early 80's tilt column. the ignition switch is in the column, it usually works, but sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get the starter to fire.
The column does not lock when the key is out. The original ignition switch is still in the dash, but no wires are connected to it. How can I rewire the original in dash ignition switch to work. Thanks Last edited by kens65fb; 10-12-2019 at 07:50 AM. Reason: ********** |

Re: Ignition Switch from column to dash
When you turn the key on a 70's early 80's GM column it pulls a rod running along the top of the column tube and the rod actuates a switch mounted on the column. The switch is attached to the tube with two screws. Provided the original installer did a clean job of wiring in the late model electrical plug to the column mounted switch, it would be much easier to simply pull the plug, remove the screws and disengage the rod. Then take the switch to your local auto parts store and get a new one. Then, a simple re-installation and you're done. Converting back to the dash would require you to un-do all the wires and transfer them circut by circut to the original switch and it would be best to scource the matching plug for the dash switch as well. I've posted a photo of the 70's style switch below for reference. The matching plug likely has a couple of tabs on it that secure it to the switch body thru the metal windows on the sides.
If the wheel is the locking style it could be restored but the steering wheel will need to come off and you may need a lock plate spring compressor so as to gain access to the locking plunger. Its a bit more involed but Youtube may have a good video. Last edited by AcampoDave; 10-13-2019 at 01:02 AM. Reason: Typo |
