Slider to Solid Back Glass?
Good morning everyone, pull up a chair and let's have a chat.
My 76 came with a (factory?) sliding rear window which I hate. Many moons ago a thief gained entry to my pickup by one and took my massive CD collection binder that we all had in the 90's. Needless to say, I was distraught then still am today. Oh, and solid glass looks better. I found a steal of a deal on a takeout OEM solid back glass but I will need a new gasket. I started looking at them on various sites (LMC, Precision, Amazon, etc) and they all say the same thing: "Rear Window Rubber does not fit trucks with factory sliding window." So, does this mean that the gasket is not fit to replace a gasket on a factory sliding window or does it mean that my cab opening is a different size? Any thoughts or experience here? Thanks in advance, you guys are rock stars.

Re: Slider to Solid Back Glass?
It just means the gasket can’t be used with a sliding window. They use different gaskets. I put a sliding back window in a truck I had in high school in the 80’s and saved the original solid glass in my parent’s attic. I ended up using it in the truck I have now to replace a slider. So I’ve had the rear window longer than any other part of the truck.

Re: Slider to Solid Back Glass?
Well that's good news then, I can go ahead and order one and feel confident about it. I find it odd that the interface profiles would be different, you would think it would be easier to match them rather than have two different ones since the cab is the same.
How would one go about ordering a gasket for a slider then? I have not seen that option and the future buyer of my slider may want to know. And my wife yells at me for squirreling away parts all the time...I'm going to show her your comment!

At one time I had additional parts trucks and a parts suburban when I was rebuilding my truck. Wish I still had that stuff every time I end up having to buy something I used to have! |

Re: Slider to Solid Back Glass?
I bought an 80 model new.
Later my dad and I changed the rear glass to a slider. I still have the old glass, complete with a Houston Oilers sticker on it! When I traded for a 82 model,it came with a slider.Still have that truck. Mike. |

Re: Slider to Solid Back Glass?
I love seeing old stickers driving around, and an original Oilers sticker would be one to be proud of.

Re: Slider to Solid Back Glass?
just a fyi some aftermarket sliders use the solid glass gasket the way they made them .
otherwise order the gasket for the option your installing . when i did one years ago the gasket was a 1 piece no center lock strip . i soaked it in HOT water for 15-20 min to help the install . i also i used the rope trick and soapy water . BASIC blue dawn dish soap is GREAT no fancy crap soap . better to have a TRUSTED friend for help to push a little and help get it in place . there not bad to do . i have done almost all my trucks glass swap outs my self . my buddy has had me do the last 2 sets of windshield glass in his peterbuilt .

Re: Slider to Solid Back Glass?
I have solid glass and I hate it! I'd trade anyone two solid glass windows for a slider.

I'll be ordering a new seal on my next LMC order, probably in the next couple weeks or so. They are half the price of the Precision one and I'll be pulling the glass sooner than later to repaint the cab.
